Raphael Ravenscroft on the sax!

Yessir...the late, great, TALENTED Raphael Ravenscroft. Was paid but a measly 20 Pounds for his work on the song "Baker Street" from the same album, which he did in one take. He was always pissed about what is arguably the most famous sax part in rock because it was s-l-i-g-h-t-l-y flat. Oh, and that check for 20 pounds? It supposedly bounced and was hung on his solicitor's office wall.

When "Baker Street" came out, I was working in album rock radio...and that effin' song practically BLEW out of the control room monitors! One of the greatest things we had heard in quite some time.

LOL! You are so right, but that WHAM song in the mid eighties, "Careless Whisper" got stuck in my ears for months. That sax drove me nuts!

Now, for a slamming sax there's Sam Butera with Louis Prima. Everybody else was trying to be him back then. (well, maybe not)

Rickster...never did I EVER think I would see the names Sam Butera and Junior Walker in the same -- or ANY! -- email! On radio, I used to follow David Lee Roth's version of "Just a Gigolo..." with Prima's. You know...you gotta show up "Diamond Dave" just a little! 🤭

And all I can say about Junior Walker is this: "...shoot him 'fore he runs now..." !!!

It's often referred to as "the sophomore slump." Most all bands have had years to hone their sound and write their tunes...slogging through frat house gigs and dive bars along the way. If that first album was a runaway hit, the record company would demand -- per their contract(s) -- that a second album be released at a breakneck pace. This was mostly after The Beatles -- and, yes, The Stones -- re-formed the music landscape (except for those pesky contracts) and changed that landscape from almost exclusively singles. (Think 1950s and early 1960s AM "Boss Jock" radio as opposed to the later album-oriented FM radio from the late '60s through the early '80s). The listening public moved away from singles and on towards albums, many with a unifying concept or idea or perhaps merely a musical "sound" that unified the project.

Then, in 1981, a little thing called MTV hit. (Okay, okay...I know people, and it's not my fault! I went to college with Bob Pittman, one of the creators/founders of MTV. He dropped out our junior year and split for New York; I completed my degree. What does that say about me? Not much...I was too busy playing those frat gigs at Pittman's old frat house! And Alan Hunter, one of the first batch of on-camera hosts, is married to a woman who went to that same college. She and I were pursuing the same degree: theatre. You want fries with that?)

Anyway, MTV is, to a great degree, responsible for the music-listening public's backslide almost exclusively into singles. Over the years, specific tracks were deemed much more important, unified albums not so much. By the time we get to Sirius/XM, Spotify, Pandora, and the like, it's damn near a fully singles world.

Ahhh, well. As my daddy woulda said, "Don't pay me no never mind." I'm just a 70-year-old Vespa-riding former bass player/DJ/TV writer-producer/retired library cataloger who misses the days of ditching school, lugging home the latest elpee by (insert name of some obscure band here), and spending the day trying to intuit what the band spent two whole sides of vinyl trying to tell me.

With a lot of 'em, they weren't saying too much!

That entire MGMT first record is very good. IIRC they dove a little too deep into making musical 'art' instead of writing songs. It alienated a lot of would be fans, myself included. I am all for taking musical risks, but for me, it was just too much of a departure. It was almost like, 'you're not smart enough to get our music.'

Prescott runs a free Bluegrass. show every summer. One summer they had a band named Sawmill Road. They were pretty good, at least until they played a Dave Stamey song. "The Vacquero Song", wow, we were entranced. I can't find that version on YTube, but this is close.

It's very strange how a piece of music grabs you. It encapsulates a part of time like no one else's. Lots of people may have loved the song, but they didn't love the song the way you did. The era you were in. The woman you were with. The refrigerator the eggs were in that you cooked in the morning, and the second mortgage that you had to take out to buy those eggs. 2 dozen, XL baby! Let it roll, ladies and gents.
