"How Long" by Ace...man, that tune WAS my junior year in college! Chart-wise, it rose to #20 in the U.K. while climbing to #3 in both the U.S. and Canadian charts.
Written by keyboardist/singer Paul Carrack, it is commonly thought the song was about infidelity...and in a way, it was. Turns out, Ace's bassist, Tom Comer, was "moonlighting" with The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver, which rightly pissed off Carrack. (An aside: The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver originally wrote and recorded the song "Sailing," which became a massive FM radio hit in the U.S. for Rod Stewart.)
Carrack went on to sing for/play with/support such folks as Nick Lowe, Roxy Music (on their elpee MANIFESTO), Mike + The Mechanics, and Squeeze. With Squeeze, he's perhaps best known for singing "Tempted (by the Fruit of Another)" from their EAST SIDE STORY elpee.
With that voice, it's no wonder Carrack has had quite a nice music career. And he ain't no slouch at keyboards, either!
Though it has not stood the test of time for you, Syd, I'd still have to say, "Good call!"
