Gold.

OK in today's edition of ET3 headset weirdness:

The M5 x 50mm screw that mounts the speedometer bracket is a good 15mm short.

I thought I had a bunk repop bracket... ya know "Grade A Perfect Repair"... but I even pulled the speedo off my Primavera, and with an OG piaaggio bracket had the same issue. There is no way the M5 50mm screw will work.
*start 60's TV cliffhanger Voice*
Is there another piece to the ET3 speedometer bracket? Is the ET3 headset larger than other smallies? Will just running down a m5 70mm solve the problem?
I am not anywhere near my garage but if you can wait wil Thursday I can take some measurements of my original screw for yeh Speedo.

So... one would *think* Piaggio would leave the whackado, balanced-6V wiring system in the 1960's. One would be wrong.

One might think I'd upgrade to a variable 12V EI instead of the maddening balanced-6V wiring system in the 1960's. ... One would again be wrong.

What I wanna do is run the 6v system with a voltage regulator spliced in for the lights. So, this begs the question... where to mount it and how to properly marry it into the wiring system.
https://www.sip-scootershop.com/en/product/voltage-regulator-sip_85154000

Check out the fine wiring diagram below.

My thought (probably incorrect) is to take a wire and connect it at the junction box with the yellow off the stator. Then run this to the VR (mounted somewhere like under the tank or in the glove box?) Then, run the wiring looms yellow wire for the taillight and yellow for the headlight out of the VR to their respective destinations. And also, of course, grounding the VR... and thus preventing the system from the balanced bulb bullshittery of bygone days....

What am I missing? Surly something?

Thoughts, comments, and spitballs appreciated.

I've converted "Balanced" systems over to regulated a few times now. If you're going to keep the OG 6V, you could honestly just skip the entire process, because the lights are all worthless anyway. Razz emoticon

Seriously, though, you just need to:
1) replace any Normally Closed switches (e.g. the rear brake) with Normally Open
2) Bond the pilot/tail/speedo/brake (basically, everything but the headlight and horn) at the junction box
3) connect the bonded circuits to the regulator
4) connect the AC out from the stator's tail light circuit to the regulator.

Hide the regulator inside the tank cavity, like you said.

That'll protect all the bulbs that actually blow in a balanced system. The headlight will still be its old, unregulated self, but since it never gets enough power to blow the bulb anyway, you don't need to worry about that.

Have the very same set up on my PV. Even have an ET3 harness.

I mounted a tiny one-wire regulator under the tank.

https://www.treatland.tv/yamaha-FS1-6V-regulator-p/yamaha-fs1-6v-regulator.htm

The single yellow wire from the regulator runs to yellow in the junction box and regulates the pilot, tail, speedo bulb circuit.

Chandlerman… the eT3 is already EI no switchero required on the brake/horn etc.

Just need to balance the voltage on the lighting coil to the lights.

Mike, so you just connect that VR yellow to the yellows at the junction box? That seems to simple. Maybe I am misunderstanding. (Read- "probably".)

I've used the regulators from Treatland and they seem to do a good job. Just hook in to your hot side and reg is grounded then I think it just bleeds off anything over 6V. That's how the hookup is so simple.

I think you will make the new deadline, real progress being made. So who do I see about placing my bet and is there a minimum wager?

Yes 2 bolt holes. And the SiP mount fits. My apologies to SIP for bagging on their "perfect repair" description. It was, in fact, accurate.

Below the cdi bracket… there is a small hole leading to the area in the frame under the gas tank.

And, there is also a larger hole below that opening to the engine compartment/area.

Would love to see the correct frame grommets, and how the ht routes back to the spark plug. Hole seems a touch small.

Yea you have to thread the spark through the glovebox. Facepalm emoticon

Here are some pictures as promised. The spark plug lead has a heavy rubber sleeve on to protect it from mud and crud.

Also Cdi bracket is mounted on rubber grommets too.
The spark and stator leads follow the swing arm

The spark and stator lead goes through a grommet in the larger hole from inside mudguard. SIP sell an aftermarket bracket to thread the wires that goes on the exhaust clamp.
