Hi all

Can anyone tell me if there's a fail safe way to determine the vintage of Vespa Gran Luxe 150 from between 1962 and 1965 without having the VIN #?

I.e. square headlight or similar? I'm quite certain mine is from 1964, but I was curious at to whether those models have clear identifying features.

Thank you for reading

I don't think so. You need the engine serial number or frame serial number to be accurate. I just don't recall any significant changes (Tail light, headlight, etc) through the production run.

Could be wrong.

Thanks mate. I've been racking my brain and trawling the web, but I couldn't crack it. It's somewhat a matter of pride by now. I do have the frame serial, so there's that

Put the frame number in the link above… it will tell you what year.

I'm near dead certain that's aftermarket paint, but the clean up is impressive none the less.

re: white only, I'm not exactly qualified to answer that but I believe they rolled in a light tan/sand color no?

Interesting… I had it repainted when I had it restored back in 2005 - from red though. I guess it must have undergone some repainting before that.

The clean up was just water and soap. It had been sitting still for a (too) long while. A minor restoration is in the works over this winter.

The GL is easily my favorite Vespa. I'd love to own one some day. That's a gorgeous bike you've got there.

Yes,IIRC all GL 150s were white only from factory. It was off white and not the the same as the bright GS160 white.

While we're on the subject. I know the color on mine should an original vespa color. Does anyone have an idea what that color is named (perhaps color code)?

Need some for touch-ups 🙏🏻🤷🏼

I doubt anyone can nail that color from a picture. You are better off taking a cowl to a good paint supplier and having them read it with the camera to come up with a match. They may have to see how it dries and tweak it a bit. Here, I can get as little as 1/2 pint mixed. Single stage paint.

also, if the straight paint is not activated it can take a long time to really harden and can attract dirt.

Spent a lot of time looking at GL's when I did mine, though I ended up going with a non-original color.

The original GL color was "Avorio" (Ivory) Max Mayer color code 1.298.3909. Don't know what that translates to in a modern paint but the old Porsche "Ivory" looks close.

The wheels, hubs and steering tube were painted the same color as the frame. The grips and cowl rubber were gray.

Hope this helps.
