I searched the whole NSM forum and could not find an answer. What would a good idle speed be? I have a portable industrial contact tachometer that I could place on the crank at the flywheel nut.

Rich enough to do 800? Not really sure what that means. Does it really lean out at low idle? I'm guessing back the idle mixture screw out or do I need to change a jet? If so, starter jet or idle jet?

Asking what's the "correct" speed for idle is like asking what's the correct thermostat setting for "room temperature."

As Jack said, he likes 800-900. I usually go for about 1,100, but will go 1,300 if I don't want my lights to flicker at idle without a battery.

Depends on engine and ignition setup.

Forgot to elaborate, 800 is possible on a stock PX electronic ignition system or something weighted. Talking over 2kg flywheel.

1.6kg flywheel and you're looking at 1100-1200rpm, anything lighter and your looking at higher.

You want it as low as possible for the health of the gears.

The "Health of the Gears" I like that statement. I have been running as low as possible but not sure of the exact speed. I will bring home the tach as really check it out.

I rock it at 1200-1300.
Lower it struggles and the sip speedo turns on and off if it's lower than that.

Well everything takes a battering when you go into a gear. The cruciform, 1st gear, primary, primary springsā€¦

So would you like to "jump in line" at 800rpm or 1300 rpm? Lol

To idle slowly the mixture must be rich enough. Set the idle speed where you like but if under 1000 cuts out, the pilot jet is too small.
