Gas in Arizona has been more expensive than every state except California for a couple years now. Last night, though, on our way home from dinner, we pass a QT gas station $.30 cheaper than even yesterday. It was cold and rainy yesterday, but I filled up this morning.

It's a Christmas Miracle!

Fuel prices in Europe (especially in Germany) fluctuate daily by 10-15 cents per liter, converted to the gallon = 0.38€- 0,57€.

I got gas at a QT on the way home yesterday for $2.49. Everywhere else was around $2.80 or higher, even at other QT's. I guess the owner was trying to spread the love.

I don't mean either -- I'm asking you which version you were using when doing a conversion.

I ask because this is a pain point that sends many forum discussions about fuel (prices, mileage, etc) into a pear-shaped downward spiral. Converting between liters and gallons is notoriously treacherous, because the term "gallon" isn't specific enough.

Well, there's another rabbit hole.

In the U.S., 60°F is considered the temperature at which fuel is "normal" in weight, volume, and energy content; thus, it is the standard temperature used to measure true fuel volume. One gallon of fuel occupies 231 cubic inches of space at 60°F.

*******

The Imperial gallon was able to hold ten avoirdupois pounds of water at a temperature of 62 degrees Fahrenheit. The capacities of the other measurements of volume were adjusted to take account of this new gallon.

My buddies in Arizona have been gloating for ages about the gas prices there. I'm still paying around $5/gal (91) here in Reno, NV. I don't know why it's so expensive here.

caschnd1,

You may have an expensive fuel formulation like California - or the Tax Man is biting your behind. Our price per gallon has dropped to $3.00 lately. Three years ago it was $1.80.

We seem to like importing fuel from other countries who produce it with more pollution than we do. Sort of like importing ice cubes for our eskimos.

Well, the Christmas Miracle turned into the New Years Disaster. Regular today is $3.59, 60 cents above the miracle, which at the time was a thirty cent drop. Which is, a net gain of 30 cents for the week.Congrats, QT!

Is this before or after fuel duty and vat or whatever your country applies to it plus the time of day as well due to currency fluctuations over the day. Also does the price relate to regular or super or whatever your grades are known by plus can you translate that to imperial gallons, grade equivalent for the UK, time of day in UK so we can check currency prices please.
I think that's all but if I missed something out please add to the list.
Thank you.
Ah yes diesel prices too and density of diesel in case I buy a diesel moped later.😊

Her in SW Ohio (Cincy/Dayton), our gas prices slipped to $2.60/gallon just before Christmas, but have now edged up toward $3/gal.

Fuel prices in the US include Sate and Federal taxes. Maybe some county taxes too. No VAT.

After tax, all gasoline taxes are included in the at the pump price which makes it easier to raise taxes on gas since the consumer doesn't know how much the tax really is. Gas tax rate varies from $0.09 to $0.79. Prices vary between states by much more than that. Gas prices in Knoxville Tennessee are $2.37-3.59 for regular. Same gas grade in LA $3.93-6.17. Average LA price $4.53 vs the $2.87 in Knoxville. Tax difference is $0.274 per gallon for Tennessee vs $0.779 for California. California requires seasonal gas formula changes which adds significantly to the cost of making gasoline.

A US gallon is 0.832674 of an imperial gallon.
The $2.39 I paid to fill my car with regular at today' exchange rate is 2.25£. I was looking at car rentals in the UK or our trip to Scotland next year so I figured I'd do a conversion just to get an idea of what gas is going to cost us. After our horrific experience with an EV rental last year no way will we rent an EV again.

Unless otherwise stated gas prices are for regular aka grade used by most Hondas, PGP (Genuine in the US). Premium if noted is used by Vespas, BMW and the like. Which makes it easier to compare as method for calculating octane varies between countries.
