Compounded by the fact that some scooters have high powered hydro disc brakes, some scooters have poor drum brakes, other scooters have super dim or otherwise non functioning brake lights. Plus not all scooters are insured (which no one ever talks about). It's a catch 22...it's safest to ride in the very back of the pack, but then you'll most likely get separated from the main group. Ride in the very front, and you risk getting rear ended. Heal up quickly! |

Ride in the very front, and you risk getting rear ended. I got hit at Slaughterhouse several years ago now. The rider was 1) a new rider; 2) from out-of-town (didn't know the area-specific risks); 3) not used to urban riding (information overload); 4) tired (it was almost at the end of the ride); 5) not used to riding in groups; 6) riding too fast for the conditions (was trying to catch up with friends ahead of him). Safety briefings can go a long way toward mitigating the worst of these risks, combined with specific planning for fast/slow groups and informal enforcement via setting cultural norms. i.e. if organizers see someone riding like an asshole, they should be taken aside at the first opportunity (, told they're riding like an asshole, and how they should improve, or that they will have to leave the rally. It's not fun to do, but it makes a big difference overall. And lastly, here's some more pre-ROM prep work. For some reason, people got concerned about our readiness when they showed up on Friday and saw this.
Look what we caught!

Cool pics. Lovely coastal scenery, omg.
Here's hoping that those who were injured are recovering quickly and the scoot(s) will just buff out easily. |

Sorry to hear about this Mike, take it easy and heal up. Plenty of rides in the future. I broke ribs so many times surfing many moons ago, but never riding. Same kinda thing - some newb cutting across your intended path, boards flying.....

Sadly, the unicorn will be parked.
My son has inconsiderately schedule an event ( his wedding or what not) that weekend. Trust the rest of the west coasters - and perhaps Cm1, will be rolling through the Cali wine country.

I'm not sure if I can or can't yet, big painful adjustments happening in life.
But - they hinted hard yesterday on Facebook that the Aggrolites are gonna be there. Hmmm….. TBD

Families can be really inconvenient.
I will have to jump in on a north San Diego county or Long Beach ride this year - no I'm not really sure which or where. ROM is such a pretty ride, when it's not torrential rain while doing 50+ in the mountains in fog. And even then, it's such a pretty ride. Totally encourage everyone who can to join. Really well organized, great group, great, ride.
