When I re-did the VBB motor about 300 miles ago ( without having ever ridden this bike) the chush drive felt solid and had no discernible play or rattles so I left it alone. It was getting very clunky when shifting so I ordered the kit and pulled the primary out. Still felt fine but I opened it up and found all springs intact. When I removed them three were not under any tension and pushed right out. The others were not much better.

Popped the new springs in which involved a bit of compressing which I did with a crescent wrench which made a handy vice to compress them and tap them in . The hardest part was getting some of the old rivets out of the gear. I don't have a 3mm bit so the closest one I had left some of the hollowed-out rivet in which was a little tough to remove. Worked out fine.

I did the shake test, all quiet. Had the weirdest bell sound when running. Open it up all the springs looked fine but no tension. Sorry it was you, but I'm glad it wasn't just me.
