Overheard without context - Suggested re-title? There was a comedy programme on the radio over here in the UK where such items were termed "Eavesdroppings"!

Two women I work with overheard ME mention something about rivets and apparently they'd never heard the word before in their lives. Rivets. I'd blame that on the crappy CA public school system, but I myself was not given instruction in shipbuilding in NY State. So I asked my GF's daughter who is the same age and she'd never heard it either. So I text my daughter - she didn't know what rivets are either. When I get home she said her BF didnt know the word either.

Where the hell am I? Shit like this makes me feel like Eddie Albert in Green Acres.

You think that's bad? Now go ask all those same people who Eddie Albert is. Or "Green Acres", for that matter.

Bonus round: ask them if they've ever heard of The Beatles.

Yeah, but rivets are still at it, holding things together. Those other people have been replaced.

Well, I knew YOU guys would know Green Acres. And rivets are still used for a bazillion things. I grew up in a steel town but it's not like I've ever built a suspension bridge.

That actually is the context in which this came up. They overheard me talking about my damn rivets. Note to self: Don't talk about your rivets at work.

Not quite the Beatles, but a friend's 12 year old grand-daughter recently burst into a conversation to tell us all about the amazing new band she just discovered. Queen! We decided it was up to her parents to break that one to her.

On the positive side, the kid has great taste in music.

I think this falls into the same category as bridge weight ratings. They drive successively heavier trucks over the bridge until it collapses, then they know what the weight limit is. After that, of course, they have to rebuild the bridge to the same spec as before.

Back when I was a bicycle mechanic, I'd heard that tire manufacturers would mount the tire to a rim, inflate it until it blew off the rim, and cut whatever pressure that was in half to use as the max inflation pressure.

Actually, I can quite believe that, as the Max Pressure stamped on the tyre rims has *absolutely nothing to do* with the pressure required when in use - despite so many people thinking that that's the pressure they should use. <sigh>

I asked my engineer buddy about this.
When they test, they measure the structure's actual deflection under load.
When the deflection reaches the limit to code (i.e. within regulated safety margins)
then that is the maximum load rating.
If you were to exceed the maximum load, it will most likely not fail, but it would still be overloaded and eroding into the regulated design safety margins.

I'd just like to point out that yesterday I overheard one of those women casually describe something as "riveting". I don't know how to describe how that made me feel, but I find myself feeling that way kinda often.
