It's time to give up the ghost on the 221 implant. I would have to mod the frame to get everything to line up and that's definitely not acceptable. I'll be pulling the original engine out of storage and making a list of parts before teaching my credit card another lesson. It's still smoldering from the 221 build. I'll still use a vape ignition and SIP speedo with the battery I already installed. I'm definitely interested in getting more power and I need another cylinder anyway. I'm all about reliability and streetable manners. It needs a clutch and one gear due to corrosion. I saw that SIP has a clutch, box exhaust and a new cylinder kit coming out soon. Of course I want everyone's input, tips and knowledge on this build. Maybe I'll be offered a seat at the GS table with the big boys.🤷🏼 Thanks whodatschrome for the advice!

you very well could wait for the aluminum cylinder to come out, but who knows when. It was suppose to be the beginning of this year, but have not heard a peep.

Do you have your original cylinder? honestly, i would just go this route with a fresh bore and fit a high compression head. probably folks around your area that do machine work. but if not, i do boring here as well as brass bushing replacements.

a Vape static ignition will be very tasty. you will have to use your original fan. i like the setup.

Oh. It sounded like you had already installed the PX engine in your first post.

I think the group would've warned you otherwise. I don't have much experience, but remember others mentioning it's a ton of frame work to make it happen.

If I'm not mistaken, only pinasco make crankcases for the GS.

You can definitely sell the malossi cases and the vmc clutch (I think you can install a cosa clutch with a bit of modding, but don't hold me on that)

I did get most of the fitting done but needed to fine tune the carb area and double check the rear shock alignment. I didn't want to have an offset rear suspension and to straighten it out seems to require more cutting. I'm totally against that. Hibbert made a comment about some higher performance mods being available now for the original engine. I thought about that and that's the route I'm going now. The 221 is going into my P200 project so that worked out perfect. Besides the paint color, 12 volt vape ignition and sip speedo the rest of the parts are original.

Ha! I was helping my buddy fix up his P when I started my GS. He left his with me when he moved to Prescott. Unfortunately he passed away but I'll finish and hang onto the P. Guess I'm a gluten for punishment. That makes four motorcycles and two scooters. 🤯

Great to see this scooter going back together maybe use the molle clutch that would be great! On this scooter it's not how fast you get there but how you look getting there (find something good for the malossi cases). Your black paint looks like chrome so you are already ahead.

Hibbert you started the ball rolling. I had given up on the old engine. Didn't think parts were available and was determined to fit a 200 in there. You got me started on looking around and SIP had some cool stuff available. Hmmm 🤔. Whodat touched on some fitment hurdles which helped sway me then GickSpeed punted me across the goal post with a pic and video. Hopefully my cylinder can be bored and put back on with his help. My goal would be to get the new cylinder kit coming out from SIP if that ever happens down the road. It's a relief to know the original engine can be used again. The 221 is going in my P200 project so that takes care of the engine. Worked out perfectly. If it wasn't for MV who knows if I ever would have finished. I'm grateful for everyone's input and experience. It's been an eye opener for sure.

Cases are cleaned up and so is the carb. The slide seems serviceable. Getting ready to shoot the lower airbox black. Noticed the 1 stamp on the carb denoting the higher compression top end of the late model engine. Jets confirm.

According to the info in that new book, engines >0069272 had a high compression head and used 27° timing. The carb was stamped with a Roman numeral 1 to indicate revised jetting. MJ 105 instead of 103. Atomizer remained 2.60 with the needle position 2 instead of 3 down from top. Pilot jet 50 but mine is a 45.

The Spanner's Manual on the wideframe engines is so good I think anyone with a wideframe should have it. It covers the 125 and 150 from 1948-61.

I'll start assembling the engine when the cylinder and driveshaft bushing are done. Have a little primer work to do on the frame then will prep to paint. Still haven't decided on what exhaust I want to use.

I picked Sticky's wideframe book just to read and peruse. No intention of ever getting a wideframe but it is a treat to see the evolution of these machines. As expected, book is worth the coin.

I think I might be worth picking up.

I don't have a wideframe either, but working on the allstate I realised there's not much info online.

Found a few videos spreiken in deutche though…

Might grab a copy for a read…

This is a perfect example of having someone else doing the work for me on my scooter. I had my cylinder bored and a new piston fitted. Also a custom driveshaft bushing installed and fitted to new shaft and powder coating to cylinder shroud including airbox top and junction box cover. Jonathan of GickSpeed did the work for me and ordered parts I needed as well. Couldn't be happier with the quality of work. Powder coated parts look better than factory originals. I never discussed price but when the bill came due I was shocked! He most certainly needs to charge more for his work. He's made it possible to put the original engine back into service. He even included a crank installation tool to slide over the seal. Thanks Jonathan!

The powder coating looks great. So what are your plans for the engine? Looks like you're keeping the stock cylinder and installing a high compression head? Any idea how much more omph that adds? And what sort of cruising speed and a top speed are you hoping for?

The engine will basically be stock. I thought the GS engines were the same till that new book came out. The late VS5 got a bump in compression, less advance and richer jetting which I've verified with mine. The new head has an oring and greater cooling surface area too. My original carb looks good but I bought new internals and extra jets. My last item will be a new exhaust. The original is full of old spunk and hard to tell how thin the steel has become from corrosion. SIP has a cool box style exhaust that's never in stock and a modified original style one as well. CC Corsa has a cool pipe too. Hoping the new exhaust will let it breathe better. It'll be interesting to see how my setup compares to the stock numbers. I'm running stock gearing but updated the crank and using the VMC Molle clutch.

That's a good question. I'll have to compare the both heads and see what they did on the new one. I planned on running the engine stock and see how I like it. If SIP ever releases their cylinder kit I have that option if more power is needed. I won't be riding this one like a lunatic do to scarcity of parts and also the steep prices. I'd also have to spend a fortune installing a front disc setup.🤣

The word is only 2%. That would make a huge difference in oil usage. Wouldn't have to carry as much either.😄

I cc'd the heads. The original measured 28cc and the new head is 26cc. Mine being the late model higher compression with the jockey hat chamber and the new head's combustion chamber is symmetrical. Ease of manufacture? The new head is heavier and has more cooling surface area with an o ring seal. The old head is cast, new one billet.

any chance of performing both a compression and squish test on both heads before your final assembly?

The center squish of the new head is better at preventing detonation but I'm impressed that the og head even had a squish.

That sounds like a great idea. I wonder how many people in the US with a VS5 know if they have the early or late style head.

Picked up a new exhaust to try. Had to get another primary gear cause the first one wasn't machined properly 😠. Also picked up a new Christmas tree. The cover plate rivet holes needed to be touched up so I used my countersink microstop tool and everything went together nicely.

The rivets look great it's nice having the right tools for the job! The exhaust looks good too are you going to ceramic coat it?
