I picked up a 71 Rally 180 today. The scoot runs, body is rough but not rusty. There's a title but no keys.

Nice job. The legshield, fender, and cowl beading is kinda funny. Not the first time I have seen crimped on auto door beading on a Vespa. Has this been repainted?

I don't think it's been repainted. It looks like there's some bondo and new paint on the front fender, I may have to do something about that, and your right about the trim, it's pretty bad.

What a beauty. Don't paint that thing, don't even wash it. I love it the way she sits with the scratches and the scars and that semi beat looks.

Those big crash bars in front always remind of the stainless steel tubes old people use in their bathrooms to lift themselves off the shitter.

Those type of crash bars caused more damage in a crash to the frame then not having them. Terrible things and drilling holes in fairing to fit criminal. Normally the panel would take the beating from an off and not the frame. Easier to replace panel than wrecking frame. Came of my px200 at 40mph and remember the scoot spinning like a top on the panel down the road. No damage anywhere else apart from a broken end to clutch lever and scuffed fairing trim and me gravel grazed, burned DM boots and hurt pride.

Holey Rally!
I pulled the "crash bars" off the front and there are ugly holes in legshield and floorboards. Thinking about having them welded up. Also got the motor out and it looks pretty good. I'll pull it apart this week and look at the crank, piston, cross and stuff.
I like the look of the stock exhaust and I may keep it, seems to be in good shape. Seat needs cover

You could always put a couple of spotlights in the holes like WhoDat has done on his 61 w/208 build. Razz emoticon

I cleaned and split the motor on the Rally today. It's in really good shape considering its age. Everything looks good. Plan to renew the seals and rebuild the clutch.

That thing looks barely broken in!

(Remember to keep the spacer that goes under the airbox. Some people remove them on the 200s but the 180 has to have it for the airbox to seal.)

I checked the air box and I didn't see a spacer. There was a paper gasket. I'll look again later.
I did manage to swap out the throttle and clutch cable. The sheathing was in bad shape on the clutch cable so put in a new one. The cable has do a 90 degree bend and that was pretty tricky to install. Luckily I had a spare.
