My check engine light went out. Fingers crossed it stays out. Just bought this scoot a month ago. The exhaust smells funny so I ASSume there was gas additive in the tank and maybe that triggered the light. The shop I bought it from said he replaced the fuel pump already.

One thing cheered me up in two different ways.

I turned the AC on in my car today for the first time this year.

It means that the weather is moving in the right direction and it also means that the AC in my 38 year old car is still working.

Yes! All Harley-Davidson big twin OHV and Side Valve engines going back to the 1920s are a dry sump design.

That's surprising to me. I had a CB 750. 1976, I think with dry sump and I thought that was pretty advanced for that time.

I can see where it would be a particular advantage for bikes because it reduces the overall height of the motor.

How common was it?

It also reduces losses due to oil splashing around the crankshaft, especially important in high-revving engines.

Dog,

I thought I had heard about ever race everywhere. The "Francorchamp" high speed course for VWs. Next thing you know, the Dutch will sponsor motorized wheel chair races for one legged partially blind individuals.

But, maybe I am out of it and everyone across the pond knows of this race. NASCAR originated from bootleggers attempting to out run the police and move their Moonshine out of the mountains.

The chassis are space frames with the 18.T engine ( and TDI Units ) mounted right behind the driver so it's more of a mid, rather than a rear mounted unit.

They weigh nothing and so they move around a lot under power so it makes things a bit lively at the start on cold tyres.

The rear wing helps a bit but the fronts are all down to teams interpretation of the rules.

I think that Spa Francorchamps has 3 x 24 hour races a year and 2 x 12 hour endurance events

My wife and I had a 2001 VW New Beetle with the 1.8T. It had the retractable rear wing at the top edge of the hatch that would deploy at around 80mph, but there was a switch under the dash that we could use to deploy it manually. (Starting with the 2002 models, the wing would deploy at 45mph, because US buyers complained about having a feature that they couldn't use.)

I read that the wing wasn't there to generate downforce on the rear wheels (it was FWD). It was there to negate lift. Apparently Porsche or Audi engineers ran into an issue on one of their cars that had a similar rounded back end to the New Beetle, and at higher speeds the airflow would cause the rear end to lift, like an airplane wing. By having the little spoiler up there to break up the airflow, it negated that lift. The deployment speed was set at 80 because that's when the aerodynamic benefit kicked in.

I noticed with mine that if I had the sunroof set to vent, the wind noise was less with the spoiler deployed, regardless of the speed I was going.

I loved that car, but hated having to do maintenance on it. Lots of engineering compromises to get things to fit within the design.

Went to Osteria del Lovo for dinner then caught I Musici Veneziani. Vivaldi's entire Four Seasons by musicians in period costume. Then on the way home we got lost. I might have done that on purpose to increase the joy for our friends who came along. It worked. They're already asking if we know dates for next year yet

The new shaped Beetle was based on the Golf chassis which is why everything in the bulkhead was very tight and difficult to work on.

Techs really didn't like working on them.

When the Audi TT first came many got crashed and the blame got levelled at the
rear spoiler so they changed them all.

Personally I think it was bollocks because 2 wheel drive 911's are way more unstable under braking than early TT's

Does anyone remember the 60 Minutes Audi Hit Piece ?

Headed to Murano for a couple hours. Plus fancy dinner tonight at Antinoo's Lounge. Great way to cap off the trip. Reconnected with old friends, and made some new ones.

While Venezia won't be on October's itinerary, already looking forward to being back for sure.

To begin with the Francorchamps race track is in Belgium, not in the Netherlands, and it is in the French speaking region of Belgium, so the Dutch have nothing to do with it.

Do not underestimate these VW Cup race cars.
As Bill Dog explained these cars are mid engine. They look like an old beetle, and that is the whole idea, but underneath it is a different thing.

I did some racing a few months ago on the Zolder racing circuit (also in Belgium) and there were some VW Cup race cars on the track. They are really fast.

Yes, the lower center of gravity is a big reason for using a dry sump system. A lot of modern motorcycles have an engine and transmission that share the same oil. Those are all wet sump designs. Harley has maintained separate engine and transmission on all their big twin engines even to this day.

This Casey Neistat video is actually cheering me up today. It starts out with him being a jackass, running around NYC with an Apple Vision Pro on his face -- a use case that I am decidedly not in favor of. It ends, though, with some profound insights into the future, and it makes me happy that I played a very, very small role in bringing some of the underlying technologies into the light.

Off to France later today.

Munich ( BMW ) and Ingolstadt ( Audi ) on Tuesday then on to Sinsheim and finishing at Autoworld in Brussels by the end of the week.

If you ever walk out to the Campus section of Spa when the Fun Cup is racing watch the drivers trying to balance the car when the "off camber" is trying to drag the car off the track, the engine is spinning up its tyres and it has no real down force to push it back down.

It's a sight to behold.

They will often have more than 100 cars starting the race.

Gah, I feel like I don't add much scooting news here anymore, but I did get nominated for another highfalutin academic award. I bought a big Vespa-shaped keyholder to display all my medals. Now I'm wondering if I'll need another one by the time I graduate. It's a nice problem to have, at least.

Not sure if this award comes with a scholarship or not. I like those just a little bit better than the medals.

I did the paint on my oil tank repair this morning. The color match is good. The clear coat needs a bit of work to smooth out the orange peel. It's tough to get a super smooth finish when it's cold in the garage (about 48F). Some work with rubbing compound should clean up the orange peel and eliminate the tape lines. Getting close to the finish line on this repair cheers me up!

The rifle serves as a visual absurdity in an otherwise very non-rifle-y space....same purpose as my accordion, also in a very non-accordian-y space.

I think there's fourteen or fifteen guitars jammed in there, with eight or nine more on the upstairs living room wall.

I'll have to actually go count them to be certain.
