My wife messaged me a few minutes ago. We took our dog, Isabelle, into the vet last week for a checkup. Years ago (like more than a dozen) the vet told us she had a heart murmur and would eventually have to be on medication. He listened with he stethoscope and we were scheduled an ultrasound for this morning because he was concerned. She's had many.

I just had a realization today. I've told the story about how the Porsche exploding paid for itself and my FIAT. Extending that further, I have saved enough in gas driving the FIAT on electric to also cover the cost of the Volvo I drove for the previous 13 years. So, since 2008, for my personal daily driver (excluding the other car we purchased last year) I am effectively at net zero dollars for purchase cost of cars since 2008.
That makes me happy.

The last time I bought a new vehicle was in 2011. I don't imagine we'll ever buy new again. I'll let someone else take that massive first-second year depreciation hit.

The assumption is that there's something wrong with it if the owner wants to sell it so soon.

We've been through four vehicles since the last ones we bought new (those were 2010 and 2011 models) and have had no issues with any of them. That 14 year old V12 twin turbo Mercedes, though... that was fun, if you're into S&M. |

I'm with the Dog, I buy new and drive them forever. Years ago, I use to lease but realized you never gain any equity.
I am definitely not a high end buyer. All my vehicles have been Hondas and they last forever (if well maintained). My bride has a Honda CRV, I drive the Honda HRV, and my daughter gets the pass downs - she has a Honda FIT. Honda has some sweet finance deals. The CRV (currently paid for) had 0% interest for five years. The HRV was 1.9% interest. By the way, I do not play down those folks that want a new vehicle every other year. Whatever trips your trigger. Bob Copeland |

Absolutely. Someone wants to lease and drive new every couple of years, go for it. I'll pick up that 2 year old vehicle, manufacturer certified with a good warranty, and drive it for the next 10 years or so. The economics of leasing don't work for me, but whatever floats your Yukon Denali or Genesis G80 or whatever you're driving this month.
Assuming there's "something wrong" with a 2 year old used vehicle, though, seems a bit short sighted. |

It's got 120,000km on it now. 2) 2013 Suzuki VStrom 650, purchased 8 years old with 5,008km on it, and a host of extra equipment added, $5,000. It will pass 60,000km this week. 3) 2019 Kawasaki Versys X-300, purchased 3 years old with 1,900km, $4,900. It's approaching 10,000km. 4) 2007 Vespa LX 150, purchased this winter with 12,000km, $2,000. Haven't ridden it much yet, but what I've done I really enjoyed. I'm not really sure how good a deal the Vespa was, I just wanted it. But on all the rest, I'm certain I got better value for my money than the people who bought them new. I don't understand people who buy or lease expensive things then trade them in barely used, but I'm really glad they're out there, and I always make a point of congratulating them on their latest acquisition, in case I want to buy it from them a couple of years from now. |

Weve still got moving the bikes and stuff from our old rented garage and our van that we're converting to a camper but that should just be a weekend of trips backwards and forwards. But yeah, a fresh start after a few years of stagnating. We cant wait!

I'm back at work after taking 3.5 days off (plus the holiday & weekend) to visit family in Wisconsin for my late uncle's memorial service.
Wife and cats and I drove to NW Arkansas to my MIL's on Wednesday afternoon. I headed out the next morning and drove up through Missouri and Iowa to Wisconsin, arriving at 8:30pm. My SIL took me to dinner, and we returned home for more beer and to chat. My brother was scheduled to work until 1am, but he arrived home arount 10:30pm. Friday I drove up to the Dells and had lunch with my mom. It was raining on the drive up, but it let up while we were eating. We drove around town so she could show me some changes to the area, and she sent me back to Madison at 4pm to avoid the storms. I should have left sooner, because half-way there, the skies opened up and dumped gallons of water on the road. I made it back to my brother's house safely, and went to dinner (and more beer) with them. Saturday we drove up to North Freedom to attend our uncle's memorial at the town park. It was a relaxed pot-luck type gathering. I got to see and chat with my uncle and aunts, and all but one cousin (who didn't go). I also chatted with some distant cousins. We headed back to Madison in the late afternoon, and went out for more food & beer. Sunday I drove over to my dad's and hung out with him and my step-mom for a few hours than expected. We had a good talk about everything. They're happy for my weight loss (I still haven't acknowledged the letter he sent, and I didn't tell them I'm on Ozempic, because I know he'd get judgey). When they asked how I'm doing it, I explained that it's mainly through portion control (accurate), only eating when I'm hungry (accurate), and stopping when I'm full (accurate). So I didn't lie, I just didn't tell them that I'm receiving chemical assistance. I also gave him the custom box I made for him for the card game he made back in 1999. They were so touched by it that my step-mom looked like she was going to cry. I also stopped by my other brother's house and chatted with him and his wife for a bit. Then I had to rush over to BarleyPop before they closed to get a couple of growlers to take back to Texas. Again, my brother and SIL took me out for dinner and beer. I had brought two 32-oz growlers of a coworker's homebrew with me to share with my brother & SIL. One was a Maple Apple Cider (about 7% abv), the other was a Chipotle Raspberry Stout (about 9.5% abv). My SIL said the cider was too sweet, my brother said it needed chicken & waffles to eat with it. It had a strong maple nose and initial flavor, followed by a tart apple middle, then a maple finish. They both liked the stout. The raspberry came across more as a berry/fruity flavor, and the chipotle came in as a subtle heat finish that creapt up the back of the throat, in a good way. Headed back Monday morning, driving south through Illinois and west across Missouri, arriving in NW Arkansas around 9pm. The cats were happy to see me. Toby sat with me for a while, and Walter stopped pouting around 11pm and then wouldn't leave me alone. The plan was we'd head back to Dallas Tuesday afternoon, so we could get settled in and I'd get a good night's rest before work today, but that didn't work out. We ended up leaving around 9:30pm, and arrived back at 2am. I only got 2.5 hours of sleep. It was nice to be home last night, and to find that we got very little damage (if any) from the heavy storms that swept through the Dallas area on Tuesday morning. ![]() , la Stout, from an extremely liberal (politically) brewer in Wisconsin. Very tasty. Picked up a 4-pack to bring back with me, my younger brother drank one, I drank one, and I forgot the other two in my older brother's fridge.

Forgot to post a pic of the wood card box I made for my dad & step mom.
The game is available for purchase (without any box) from Drive Thru Cards. I get nothing from any sale, other than the satisfaction that the game is being spread around the world. ![]() The original box my brother designed for my dad's game. Made of folded heavy cardstock.

Yes, they couldn't give them away. Each dealership had to stock/buy 6 of them and they were like an anvil to shift.
Even if it was a Mercedes Benz underneath, no one wanted them. |
