Bartender, do you think you could squeeze a dram of whiskey on top of this pint?
Sure! Then fill it up with beer!

Doing some final mechanical preparations before heading out on a 4-5 week long ride at the end of this month. This worn rear tire was replaced today along with fresh oil and filter.
Harley engineers in the 1930s were on top of it. No need to remove/adjust the drive chain in order to remove the rear wheel. There are 5 lug bolts that hold the brake drum and chain/sprocket to the rear hub. Then the wheel just comes out the back. This kind of thinking that benefits the mechanic always cheers me up. ![]() Worn out tire

I usually go through 3 or 4 tires for each tube I use. They really don't suffer much wear unless you're running your tires under inflated. I just look for signs of chaffing and replace if I see that.

Our lawyers in Portugal received my Portuguese Resident card today. My wife received hers a year ago. That was the last hurdle in a 5-year project to gain residency in Portugal, and almost three years since we actually applied.
And while the wait and the various bureaucratic obstacles were sometimes excruciating to overcome, I am so happy that it is finally over. And that's what's cheering me up today.

Jess -- congrats to you and your wife on receiving your Portuguese resident cards! I LOVE me some o Porto (when you're nearby, say howdy to the giant rubber ducky on the bridge for me!). I'd move my partner and me there in a heartbeat, but I'm afraid that, for us, age would be a mighty tough obstacle to clear. Bummer. And Lisboa ain't too shabby, either!
Muitas felicidades! Victor

I don't think age is necessarily much of a hurdle -- this is part of our long-term retirement plan -- but I will acknowledge that the effort required is pretty significant. My wife and I initially did a two-week scouting tour on the Iberian Peninsula to get a feel for several of the candidate cities (Lisbon, Porto, Madrid). We thought Lisbon and Madrid were both amazing cities, but we agreed we probably didn't want to live in either of them. Porto, though, was interesting and comfortable and... less frenetic? Is that a thing? It certainly felt like a city we could live in. And so we decided to make it our own. |

Small thing, but sitting in a bus on an LA freeway watching guys lane splitting makes me happy. (It's a bit tidier than the Mexico City version I see more often).
It's just so smooth and efficient. I can't believe some of the online comments about it.

My mother died yesterday, peacefully, in her sleep. She was 106. When she was a little girl in the UK near Chester they had candles and gas lights and she spent her last years with an iPad.
A very happy ending. We should all be so lucky. This has cheered me up today.
