Each stage requires a test, which may include a compulsory amount of supervised training, a theory test, a hazard awareness test, and a practical on-road test. The age requirements can vary from country to country.

What's cheering me up right at the moment?

Finishing off a bottle of Maker's Mark 46 Cask Strength which has been nursed since early 2023. One of the first ones they made twist-top instead of corked. Which i wholly disagree with especially since they've been using rubber corks so degradation/crumbling/corking the liquid isn't an issue. But that's a rant for another thread.

It's in the top 5 list of "typically readily available and at little to no markup from MSRP" bourbons for me.

It has me dangerously cheerful actually. So much so I'm starting to bookmark various items available at italian vintage motors and considering an import before moving from Maryland to Colorado.....

i never drank bourbon but i drank three barrels brand brandy and it was quite nice so i think what you are drinking is quite spectacular but the funny thing is that bourbon reminds me of chicken tax Laughing emoticon

At 10 years old I got on a powered two wheeled vehicle. I was pretty aggressive on the bicycle so my dad worried for my health held me back on motorcycles. Eventually my uncle got me going.

Of course I was on a bicycle at about 4 or so, a regular 20" wheel kids bike was to big for me to start off on so I had to lean it up against a fence or garage door to climb on and then once situated in the saddle push off and start pedaling.

I have always loved anything with two wheels. I was ridden passenger on my Dad's Heinkel scooter at also probably 4 or 5 years old. I can vaguely remember being on the back with my younger brother in front when dad took us to the county fair.

I commuted for years on a motorcycle in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas while working there for decades.

My words of wisdom are practice in out of the way areas with little to no traffic on closed course if at all possible on small lightweight bikes. A little dirt bike (honda XR 100 on an eighth mile dirt track) is how Kenny Roberts trains the fastest road racers in the world to perfect the technique so that you are better able to handle emergency situations when they arise.

And as far as traffic goes pattern recognition is your friend! If you ride the same route back and forth to work everyday you get to know where the problems are (mostly intersections). Always remember you are invisible on a motorcycle. People look right at you and just don't see you because they just don't expect motorcycles especially in the US and be ready to take evasive action when they come right at you. Pay attention to how people are driving and try to predict where they are going as a habit so you are not surprised.

When you stop for traffic be aware of what is behind you and try to stop where you can squeeze between the cars as a type of shield when someone not paying attention to the stopped traffic hits the car in front of him.

At 65 years old now I have been riding for over 50 years and still trying to improve. I will be reading the rest of the responses to see if I can learn something!
50 years of experience is worth more than gold I'm thankful for the wisdom ... education doesn't end till the grave !

Tomorrow is a big day. I head off on a 4-5 week long PTW adventure! I've done many long rides over the years and the evening before I'm always a bit apprehensive. What will the weather bring? How will the bike perform? Etc. The bike is loaded with everything except my duffle which I'll finish packing in the morning. Tools ✅ , spares ✅ , rain gear ✅, extra fuel ✅. Looking forward to getting underway and that cheers me up!

What is cheering me up today is the reaction by the members of the 7 Bridges Scooter Club when one of our riders needed help.

Tanya was riding in the group of around twelve riders from Jacksonville to Starke, FL for lunch at the Call Street Cafe.

When we arrived across the street from the diner, we all lined up in two rows in the parking spaces on the street.

I was putting my Xmax, the Big Ugly, on it's stand when I heardTanya let out a groan and I could see that her side stand hadn't held and she was holding up her Burgman 400, keeping it from falling into my scooter.

Before I could get around my bike to assist, several other riders intervened and got the scooter upright and on the center stand.

Then she felt that her knee was hurting and she felt dizzy.

I helped get her seated on the curb so she could begin to get settled.

The dizzy spell went away quickly, but the knee got worse.

Others helped get her into the restaurant and Cecil got a bag of ice to help the swelling.

As we were eating, Tanya realized that she couldn't ride home with the damaged knee, so Russ and Cecil came up with a solution.

They rode 20 miles to Cecil's house in Middleburg, picking up his truck and trailer.

Then rode back to Starke to pick up Tanya and her scooter where Paul had stayed with her to help the boys get it loaded onto the trailer.

They drove it 60 miles to her house in Jacksonville and dropped her off.

Then back to Cecil's where Cecil was home, but Russ had to ride 40 miles back to his house in Jacksonville.

Tanya went to an emergency room and got an examination that showed a cracked bone.

Hopefully it heals quickly.

It is always nice to find people helping others.

It happens much more than most people realize.

I'm on a family holiday staying in a house right on the river in the Norfolk Broads area of East England. My day started with a 25 mile cycle ride, then to a afternoon on the beach followed by a BBQ.

I'm not certain but there may of been a cloud in sky at some point earlier?

Hoping it stays cloudless tonight as this place is very quiet and remote and theres a meteor shower forecast for tonight.

Now on my third beer contemplating whether to put the fishing rods out in the river which is literally 5 feet from the patio garden.

Life is good.

New MacBook Pro arrived today!

It came with an extra charger and Magic Keyboard w/ Touch ID. I'll use my existing Logitech MX Master.

It's currently updating to Sonoma 14.5. Once that's completed I'll have to get ahold of IT to have them download the Self Service app to it so I can install Office & Adobe CC. I'll also need them to install a few other programs. I'd use the Migration Assistant, but I don't have Admin rights.

I agree. On scooter group rides, the best comes out. In fact, no one is left behind.

Good hint for ride leaders. In the USA, I have the highest level of the AAA Motor Club Membership. With the card, you can use it on anyone in your group (not just for you). You can call and have them transport a crashed or broke down scoot +200 miles and pay nothing. The lowest level of AAA Motorclub only tows you 20 miles or the nearest repair shop or residence.

I think I pay about $120 a year for this membership. My daughter has used her's on her boyfriends piece of crap old car on numerous occasions. If you use it five times they turn it off until your next renewal.

Something to consider.

Booked up a ride to Wolfsburg in Germany next month to visit the VW Museum.

It was going to be an endurance ride but rather than overstretch myself in my later years I'm going to suck it and see by keeping it to 450 miles and judge it on that.

I'm also 770 miles into this belt and you know what that means.

I'm done with day #3.

Day 1 was Reno, Nevada to Salina, Utah (540miles). Hot but clear skies and no rain. Lots of smoke from the Park fire in Northern California 🥲

Day 2 was 290 miles, Salina, Utah to Gunnison, Colorado. 2 1/2 hour delay waiting to cross the Blue Mesa Reservoir bridge on US-50 due to emergency repairs.

Day 3 was 274 miles, Gunnison, Colorado to Lamar, Colorado. Amazing views crossing the Continental Divide at Monarch Pass. Made the previous days delay worth the wait. I'm solidly into the central plains of the USA now. It was 102F from about noon on. HOT!!! 🥵 The record setting heat is continuing. I'd like to turn north to avoid it, but bad thunderstorms and tornadoes are predicted in that direction. I'll have to see how it plays out.

A few photos…

Rode to work today. The smell of fresh cut cilantro always puts a smile on my face. Last week for the first time ever I got a blast of mint that was being cut in the fields. Another good one while riding is the scent of orange blossoms in the evening. There also is a chili processing plant that smells amazing when the steam is billowing out the exhaust stacks. 😋

Wednesday my friend turned 90! I've known him since 2000 and he builds Bücker biplanes from scratch. He's from the Czech Republic and remembers when the Russians came through his town towards the end of Word War Two. He loves the pastrami I make so today I'm bringing over a whole pastrami, making sandwiches and leaving the rest for him to enjoy. This one is about 13lbs. So he'll be able to freeze the rest and use later. It makes great tacos and chili with the leftovers.

Here's a pic of him and the prototype of the Bücker Jungmeister he scratch built from an old photo. The prototype had an inverted 6 cylinder then subsequent models used the Seimens radial engine. I watched him build it from start to finish. It's the only one in existence. Happy 90th Joe!!

Indeed. Good story.

Makes me think of one of my local guys. On our recent Wisconscoot and CubsKing's crash, Mike was the first one there keeping him down and keeping him from puling his helmet off. I guess it's the first reaction when you're down, but not the safest. Anyway, he stuck with him until the paramedics finally arrived. He insisted on riding his bike back to our AirBnB. (perhaps not the best move as he found out it had no rear brakes, but still...)

On our recent Yooper Loop, where gitder's belt disintegrated, he brainstormed the UHaul as the best solution and gave him a ride to the rental place an hour down the road.

I feel fortunate to ride with a bunch of guys that are reliable like that. Not fun having crises of any sort, but great to see people help pick up the pieces to get things sorted and support others.

I opened this thread for something more trivial. When packing for my last ride, I was going to grab my Platypus water bottle...found it, but the cap was missing. Crying or Very sad emoticon Looked all over, the drawer it came out of, my bags, etc. No luck. So, went without it...got home, put stuff away, started looking for a replacement....you could get one, but it cost half of a new complete unit. Today I walk into the bedroom and spy a cap under the bed. Must have fallen off quietly when I was packing. One less thing to deal with.

Which one do you have?

We have a Glowforge Pro at work. It's ok, but we realize we should have gone with something intended for more than just hobbyist use.

I have the xTool S1 40w. It comes with very good software. It is supposedly the first fully enclosed diode laser, but I think that Glowforge is enclosed, too. xTool makes quite a variety of machines. Mine came with a rotary device to do round and spherical objects. I haven't gotten to that, yet.
xTool makes 20w and 10w units that cost much less than the 40w. So far, I'm lovin' this machine. It seems to be very well made.

The Glowforge is a CO2 laser.

The primary reason my boss ordered the Glowforge was to engrave tumblers, only to discover once we received it that it is unable to do so without performing warranty-voiding modifications.

I've considered getting one for myself at home, and am leaning towards an xTool.

So far at work we've mainly used it for contour cutting foamcore cutouts. The Pro has a passthrough slot so we can work on pieces longer than the bed. It is still limited to the 18" width, though.

The xTool has a passthrough, also, but you need to get their conveyor setup. It too is limited in width by the bed.

Photos,

Between my wife and I we must have a million photos of our dog and a few videos. Looking through them is both painful and happy. She had a good life.

And evidently enjoyed sleeping!

My boss is working on getting us a Canon Arizona 1380 XT flatbed printer, and a Colex SXC-1732 flatbed cutter/router. The hold up is that she has to get three competitive quotes, and due to the cost (just short of $500k), will have to get approval from the School Board. The thing is, we outsource so much work that we could produce on it that having it would pay for itself in less than one year.

Here's something that's cheering me up: the IT tech assigned to our location came by today to help install the software we need without having to have a meeting with all of our bosses and the software engineers. He just has to sit here and type a password for us every now and then.

Except he thought he was done, so he left, but I still need him to type the password a few more times to complete some installations.

Recovering from COVID.

My first time.

Apparently it's still a thing.

Obviously I'm not cheered up because I contracted it but rather that it was a mild case and I am recovering nicely with no medical intervention or bed time.

My doctor said that since I am improving and don't have a fever he declared me not contagious.

I got vaccinations early on but it has been many months since I got a booster. That's on me.
