I probably won't ride in this specific pair, though I have another pair of the more brick-red type color they're usually made in these days that have a substantial patina going so i've used them from time to time. Typically I'm in Thursdays or Trumans.

Of course now that my Sturgis 2.0 from Allen Edmonds are back and resoled and looking lovely, those may get the call from time to time as well.

This all hinges, naturally, on actually getting cleared at some point by the surgeon to ride again....
Three bootmakers I'd never heard of. Wow!

Surgeon's clearance is optional. According to the Orthopedic Surgeon that saw me after I broke my back, I'm not supposed to be running, lifting over 20lbs, rock climbing, diving, backpacking, playing squash, mountain biking, motorcycling, or most of the other things I do. If I recall correctly, he was OK with a slow walk and relaxing with a good book. I've decided to risk all of it. It's worked out well for 25 years so far, but you do have to be cognizant or the risks you're taking, and the potential consequences...
Okay well you show me how to ride with a leg locked in a straight position (and securely carry my crutches on the vespa) and I'll take random internet stranger's advice over that of someone who went to medical school and has done hundreds of ACL reconstructions in the last 10 years.

I mean, I can almost picture that. Doesn't seem that far-fetched.

Not that I'm recommending it. Just that I can imagine someone crazy enough to try it.

Speaking as someone who is only just emerging from surgery, daily pain, and mobility issues, I can say with sincerity that I feel (or felt) your pain.

As long as you claim to have been around you dont seem to have learned yet how to take a fucking hint and drop it.

Suggest you google a process to learn.

I broke my foot back in 2012. I had to wear one of those plastic boots for 6 weeks. I didn't own a car so I had to learn how to kickstart my old Harley with my left leg.

Not quite the same as the brace they put people in after ACL reconstruction (I did that routine in 2023) but it was an adventure all the same. 😂

What's cheering me up today?.....
I found this awesome site (over the weekend) and posting my first post.
I'm excited about getting my first Vespa after riding "the Big Bikes" for almost 3 decades.
My recent trip back from Italy (Aug '24) has inspired me to get one of these icons

After a bad month and racing against a typhoon that left us at 24 hours travel due to a running out of fuel, a cancelled flight, and trains shutting down, we arrived in Kyoto tired but safe. In spite of the odds, I managed to go to the Degner leather store http://www.degner.co.jp/ / https://youtube.com/@degneryourtube and buy a nice pair of riding pants and some odds and ends. I wish the jackets fit me well enough to go for it, but the weak yen makes up for it on the other purchases.

(Oh, slick liner in those jackets at 1:17)

After 29 days on the road, my old chopper was a filthy mess. Making matters worse, I had a pushrod tube that was leaking oil. That oil was splattering all over the exhaust and baked itself into a hard varnish. I spent at least as much time just cleaning up the exhaust as I spent on the rest of the bike. About 16 hours of effort. I love putting on the miles, but I don't like my bike to look like a rat bike. Getting the bike looking good again cheers me up.

After about 8 hours of work, the pipes look almost new. #000 steel wool soaked in acetone. This worked for the oil and a rubber tie down strap that melted into the pipe.

I know this isn't a competition but years ago I swapped out my Honda CB650's exhaust for a Motad Chrome version and the next day a plastic bag wrapped itself around the downpipes.

Yeah, isn't that just the perfect day? And chrome is harder to clean than my ceramic coated pipes. Any kind of abrasive will scratch/dull the chrome.

Getting my spinal fusion surgery date set finally is cheering my up a bit. The last 2 years have been rough, and 4 months of PT did not really help. Not looking forward to recovery (this is my third go at back surgery), as this will be the most invasive operation. But I am very thankful that there are dedicated people that go to school, go thru internship and all the other training to be able to give someone like me an option like this.

My wife injured her knee playing pickleball a couple weeks ago. Tore her ACL and meniscus Crying or Very sad emoticon Some might recall, I had a similar injury (ACL + MCL + meniscus + tibial plateau fracture) about 18 months ago. I'm greatful that we have a really outstanding orthopedic clinic here in Reno to care for these kinds of injuries (Reno Orthopedic Clinic - ROC). They are a very efficient organization with all the facilities inhouse for dealing with this (MRI, X-RAY, surgical center, physical therapy, etc). My ACL reconstruction and recovery went super smooth. I'm confident Deb's ACL reconstruction and recovery will go equally well. We've already had our surgery consult and surgery is scheduled for September 10th. It cheers me up that she's in great hands! One less thing to stress about.

I hope this gets you the result you need. Back pain can be so debilitating. Keep positive during your recovery. This makes all the difference for me.

Best way I can think to describe it is as a cross between tennis and ping pong. Played on a court that looks a lot like a tennis court, with solid paddles and a whiffle ball. Played primarily by the over 55 crowd, and having tried it a couple of times myself, I can say it's a lot more fun than it sounds.

Working lunch. Inasmuch as the Air Force ever "works" of course, and being on convalescent leave i'm just enjoying the last couple days before I go back to work and pretend i have any responsibilities til I retire on the 30th.

So i'm at the QG for a shave.

It won't be long until the snow starts flying around here. I decided I better get out there and take a ride around the lake (Tahoe) before it's too late. Just one day after Labor Day and the crowds are mostly gone. It's been months since it was this easy to find uncrowded pull-offs to take photos and enjoy the views. This cheers me up.
