We spent a few days camping at Fallen Leaf Lake near South Lake Tahoe this week. We have a slightly delayed start to the camping season this year so it cheered me up to get it underway. I will never get enough of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Simply breath taking!

When the world is getting me down (as it is right now) and I need to take my mind off things, this is one of my go-to happy places. And I've posted this before, elsewhere, somewhere on MV.
This wasn't even my era -- I was 3 years old when this happened. The thing that I absolutely love about his short, short performance is that it represents the exact moment when Grace Slick ascended to Rock & Roll Legend. And I can even name the exact point in the song: in this video, it's at 1:24. She just fucking nails it, and does it live in front of 400,000 people. There's so much win here.

Funny how small things can set the tone for your day.
Sitting in the straight through at a red light on the Stella on the way to work this morning, a motorcycle pulled up next to me in the lane to turn right. I looked over and got a fist bump from a guy on a CBR. That felt good.

I was able to see her and the rest of Airplane a few months later on November, 30, 1969. I was 13 and went along with my older brother and a friend to the Palm Beach Pop festival. Many great acts during those three days - Grand Funk, the Byrds, Hendrix, Joplin, King Crimson, Sly, among many others, with the Stone closing it out. Good times. Gracie had a voice like an angel and could belt out like a hurricane.

Old member of my first unit finally got sentenced. Only took them 2.5 years with him out on bail the whole time.

Which goes in the pissing you off thread (seriously texas why does a child rapist get PROBATION for systematically abusing her own daughter for years?). But chris is going to die in prison. This song and a few others are cemented in my memory from that amazing summer. I would have held your hand in 1967 so you didn't get lost in the crowd in Golden Gate's panhandle. We'd walk closer to the stage where the Airplane were doing another free concert, and you'd see that Grace really was a pretty gal! I probably documented here that, at 18, I left home from Amherst MA, to hitch-hike (easy and freq. in those days) to see the Big Sur (Baez album cover!) After camping there, caught a ride with a guy going to 'Frisco. He took an apt smack in the middle of Haigh/Ashbury.... "can you cook, kid?" "Sure!" Summer of Love in the Haight!.....totally by accident. I cooked for him for my room and board and wandered the city in bare feet with my Martin 0-16NY concert model. When I'd made $2 I'd knock off work for the day - and make friends. By December things were less kind in the Haight and I wandered down to LA - met some fellow peaceniks. We organized the first Love-In near Pasadena. Met a girl and got married. The summer of Woodstock - I was in TX training as a combat medic (conchy) then off to the central highlands of Vietnam. (ever see We Were Soldiers? So, always figured I'd made it to 2 of the 3 of the biggest events of my generation! Anything from 1967 comes on the radio - I want to take my shoes off! O.S..

I have, however, discovered some quite good beers: Clausthaler, Bitburger, and Guinness Zero. My wife likes Michelob Ultra, which I have dubbed beer-flavored mineral water. Michelob Ultra Zero is even more so. On the plus side, it is only 29 calories per 12-ounce serving. It's too bad that I know that I'm drinking a non-alcoholic brew. Otherwise I might benefit from the placebo effect and get a bit of a buzz off it.

I dug deep into the closet and retrieved a couple more pairs of old motorcycle boots today. I bought the men's boots mail order (no internet yet) in 1979 from an ad in the back of EasyRider magazine. They are branded "Nasty Feet" but we're made by Chippewa here in the USA. The women's boots were purchased from a vintage store in Arizona about 20 years ago but we're originally made in the late 1970s.
I reached out to Fukurokuju, a vintage boot shop in Tokyo, to see if they are interested in the women's boots. They are a size 5 US and a little too small for her. I've amassed quite a collection! 😂 This cheers me up. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
