I don't know what thread garncarz is referring to as i didn't read any pretentious comments. Odd first post though don't you think?

Not a reflection on the OP, but I always get a sense people want a pat on the back when they've brought a scooter like this expecting people to say it's a "rare bike to be found in that condition" and it's a bargain regardless whatever the price you paid.

Unfortunately it should be more of the case of being paid to take it away.

I think we can chalk that up to…

I'm sure I've said this before, but I just can't get my head around what would possess a person to jump into anything as niche and arcane as a vintage scooter without researching their tentative interest or consulting someone in the know.

Dunning-Kruger effect, maybe?

Maybe it's me, and no offense to the OP (I hope they get their money back), but I've always been more of the mindset of doing some research and asking the important questions BEFORE pulling the trigger. I mean, my first foray into this forum - being a Chinese scooter owner - was to ask, "Hey, what's up with Vespas?" and the reception, with a few exceptions, was kind and informative. Because of the help here on the forum I avoided many of the pitfalls I might have otherwise overlooked.

A sticky for "Thinking of buying a Vespa? Check out THESE links" would be wonderful for people.

I definitely think the vintage look instantly tricks people into a false sense that it's old and must be worth something making it rare and cool.

What's the effect where "you think of something in pop culture (mass thought) is true but it's actually just a collective wrong fact"?

There should be a bodge section in Things to Consider before Buying a Vintage Vespa

All good everyone. Thanks for the quick info lesson. Appreciate all the feedback. Laughing my ass off. I'm told all the time (by my wife) that I don't have feelings so it certainly helps. Haha.

I mostly dabble in older BMW bikes (thumpers).

To all the meticulous folks, don't worry, I don't have too much $$$ into it so not too worried. Looks pretty neat for what it is (junk I guess haha). Don't really have a plan to put it on the road. The person who I bought it from just had it in his living room as such.

Indeed. Welcome back!

Given that you have competence working on old bikes, you should definitely go through it and see how bad it is (or isn't).

First thing I'd do is pull the gas tank and take a look inside the frame and up the tunnel for welds or other evidence of being pieced together from multiple bikes, rotten metal that's been bondo'ed over. Assuming that passes muster (the P-series floor mat on a Sprint always gives me the heebee-jeebies).

Next, check that the fork isn't made out of an old water pipe. After that, assuming it starts and runs, take it around the block and see if anything big falls off. If not, you can decide if you want to play the "how far from home will I be when it gives up the ghost?" game or not.

And, even if I didn't say it up at the top, welcome to NSM, a bunch of snarky Vintage Vespa Nerds of the first order. If you enjoyed our humor thus far, you'll fit right in.

JordBird, welcome back! I feel weird saying that since I'm new too. I was wondering if your plan is to have a scoot to boogy around on or just like old Vespas? It's definitely a useful tool and stress cleanser for me to ride. Hopefully you have a chance with the one you have. Lots of people to help here on NSM. (I still like the rack on the teal scoot!)

No plan as of now. It's currently in corner of the dining room as decor that the kids love to jump on.

Maybe in the spring I'll try and get it going with all the free time I have Facepalm emoticon

I love that rack on the teal one too. We got the pink one first and it didn't come with it.
Not sure if anyone here has watched the Disney movie Luca but it's a must if you're into vespas and have kids.

I wasn't being a smart aleck when i said i liked your pink scooter. I actually proudly own and ride a pink vespa, so i'm quite partial to pink scooters.
