The Bajaj 4t was imported to the US from 2002 to 2006, when India stopped making them.
I purchased a brand new 2002 in 2002, and put over 13k miles on it. It wasn't the fastest, but it was built like a tank. I had an HRA reverse megaphone pipe on it, and modded the carb intake with a foam filter. I sold it, which in hindsight, was a boneheaded maneuver on my part, but it is what it is ![]()

Reno to SF and back for a free scooter? So i'm guessing that will put you around $100 for fuel and coffee to get you there and back home. I kinda of like the 4T Bajaj for what they are. Being a 4 stroke they're quite torquey for climbing hills. I logged in quite a few miles on a few of them when wrenching on friends' Bajajs.
From what i recollect, the early 2002 models had some sort of issue? I can't remember if it was like a faulty regulator or something? Perhaps there was also some sort of something in the transmission as well? It's been long enough that i just can't remember. I had another friend who was the local Bajaj mechanic. He knew the insides and out quite well! I'm pretty sure he could do a full rebuild on one with his eyes closed. He ended up giving me his shop repair manual for both the 4T Chetak and Legend. Another friend still has both a Chetak and Legend. They currently don't run because he simply quit riding them. Old bad gas makes the 4T scoots run like poo...or not run at all. The stock foam air filters also rot out. The rubber fuel (and emissions) hoses also rot out and split...not if, but when. Surely all of that stuff on on this bajaj that you're after will need those items replaced. Good luck finding clutch parts (plates, basket, ect), shift cross, cush springs, gaskets...which are all parts that tend to fail first. |

Top of that Bajaj engine reminds me of the 4T Stella. Luckily, the Stella uses EFL gearing instead of Bajaj's special sauce.

are you missing the whole air filter box?
there should be an air filter in the body there. it slides in from the LH side under the cowl there's a vertical slit just ahead of the battery. that air filter was crap when new, and it's longggg been NLA so just get some UNI foam and cut one to fit.

remember Bajaj 4T is just like standard motorcycle: gearbox/wet clutch and engine oil are all common sump.
spec is I wanna say SJ 15/50 which is odd and difficult to find. at the shop we used castrol 15/40 diesel SAE, mainly because that was what was available at the auto zone next door. Synth or semi synth is fine as long as it's formulated for wet clutch, so any of the yamalube or motul type stuff is fine. I'd probably just run motul 3000 10/40 or 20/50 and KISS. the air filter lives inside of the white airbox. ![]() the long rectangular slit sits up against the body on the LH side under the cowl. there should be a rubber plug over it, you pop that out and there's a plastic piece that pulls out with the filter sandwiched between.

skids wrote: So after finding a loose connection and tightening that up it turned over with the electric starter. I also removed the spark plug and made sure it had spark. I tried it a few times and it felt like it almost wanted to start a couple of times and then I gave it a rest and plugged the trickle charger back in. When I went to try it again later I got nothing again and I am certain the loose connection I found previously is now making good contact. I suspect the kill switch and or starter switch to be the problem now but I will have to go through it step by step and see what is wrong. It is probably very difficult to get original replacement parts and even what I may be able to find used is questionable anyway so thinking about eliminating kill switch altogether since there is a key...and possibly wiring in a new starter switch for the electric start. On the left side right next to the slot for the air filter it came with a couple wires that were cut and then twisted together and taped with electrical tape wondering if anybody knows what this is for and why it might possibly have been bypassed? |

skids wrote: There is no clutch safety switch enabled on this bike. It fires up (and produces spark) without pulling the clutch in. I haven't been able to keep it running very long though. So that may be what that is. Thanks for the tip! I know absolutely nothing about these bikes but there are some free downloads of manuals on the orphanbajaj site I will have to try out. |

Thanks for making a new thread, skids. It's been a nightmare trying to glean information online. This thread, so far, is already super-helpful, and I will be sure to contribute whenever I can. Seems we got our first Chetak 4Ts the same week!

Wanted to add: Mine has all the CDI cables intact and still doesn't require clutch pressure to start. Starts right up (as long as it's in Neutral) Something else must be bypassed. I saw you mention Facebook groups, if you're not already a member, Bajaj Club of America(BCOA) has pinned documentation/pdf such as Owner's and Service Manuals, as well as the parts list you mentioned. People there are also super helpful if you're in a pinch. (I'm still two posts short of being able to ask my own questions and start my own thread, here 👎🏾)

Holy crap! I can't even imagine 'before urethane'. What were they made of before?!
The West Coast has some absolutely amazing parks, and the vert is exactly that. I got to do some skating in the PNW, last year. Mostly in OR. Burnside, Eugene, but even the podunk towns had massive parks. As you can see, NJ is more street oriented than vert. Biggest ramps around here are about 8'. Closest thing to Cali parks on the East coast is FDR Skatepark in Philly. I skated there almost daily for the 4 years I lived there. I love that whole old-school synchronized skate stuff. There's been a recent revival of flat-ground freestyle, which I'm happy the younger crowd is getting into. Any updates on the Chetak? Figure out what's bypassed? |

(Hoping this is my last 'Lurker' post 🤞🏾)
Found this other, since abandoned, Chetak.weebly blog, somewhat helpful. Wondering how much carries over to the 4T from the classic. Def looking to redo control cables, and replace the missing starter segment for the electric start. Previous owner was told by their shop the starter wasn't working bc the battery wasn't strong enough. As you can see in the photo, those jerks never even took the motor cover off for a look. Reached out to SIP customer service about compatibility a couple days ago, but they haven't gotten back to me, yet. Might just order and make it their problem if it doesn't work 😜 http://bajajchetakclassic.weebly.com/quick-vespa-parts-lookup.html ![]() |
