When my GTS 300 runs for a while and the engine is warm, I see a small amount of oil near the ignition cover gasket.
Could this be a faulty gasket?

Are you sure that's engine oil?

Maybe it is then.

It's just ignoring the black soot that it contains, it doesn't look as golden / brown that I'm used to.

Ah! So i might be right that it's not engine oil.

Ok, what then.

Coolant is typically pink or green and has a different smell (my pink has a sweet smell, don't know for green).

Or rain water, or condensation, or water from washing. These might have been in a puddle. eg there is a spot been the ecu and cylinder that can easily have a puddle

One of these two might have collected some black dirt/soot as they trickled down

there's a rubber grommet at the top where the wiring for the stator goes through, sometimes you'll get a little seepage there that will run down the side of the cover to collect and drip there at the bottom.

has the cover ever been off for any repair work, say a water pump or stator?

I have only just owned the scooter, but judging by the bolts, it has already been opened once.
I'll give it a good cleaning, maybe I can find out where it's coming from.
