After a lot of various ways I though would work, I came up w/this setup. Using a GoPro self adhesive base, an adapter and a spring tension grab mount (I added mounting tape to the back of the Garmin) and I drove around with it. So far so good. I had tried to use a ball mount but that didn't work as well and unit was too low and blocked some of the dash. Any way this works/looks/functions well.

Side view of mount. Sorry I don't know how to put (2) pics on one post. The truck mounting the spring mount to the adapter part is to run a 1/4-20 tap through the hole where a thumb screw for the GoPro would go, allowing you to bolt the adapter to the back of the GPS/phone spring mount. Notice the application/location of stainless Allen head bolt.
