Perhaps they thought the Argentinians wouldn't notice, or the Top Gear staff thought nothing of it and were caught off guard...
Sounds/reads like Argentina crushed the cars, quite thoroughly, after impoundment...

When I moved myself and my GTV to upstate NY, I managed to snag a custom AMA plate that was simply GTV.

For my TARDIS-themed Helix, I had D0WE00. A friend and I spent a few hours amusing ourselves coming up with quite the long list of Whovian-inspired plate ideas, if anyone ever needs any.

I think in the UK they used to be called Vanity Plates for obvious reasons.
