Yeah, it does look less than ideal.

So which bits should I order? Just that bit or other bits as well?

you can order just the bushing, and knock it in or you can order the whole plate with a new bushing and just R&R that. malossi also offers an updated solid poly bush, fyi.

if you haven't done your swing arm bearings and bushes, it's probably high time. again, given the type of riding you do.

So ...

1st pic:

Could do 19 (and maybe 18x2 as may mash on removal) or replace with 17. Hmm, don't like the thought of the frustration to bang 19 in.
Probably do 20 as well?

For the bearings and bushes I take it you mean 2,3,4 and 10,11,12?

2nd pic:
How about the one on the engine part 12?

If you go with the Malossi bushing, it does about the same thing the upscale shock bushings you like do. You will feel the road better and lose a lot of the slop inherent in the stock Vespa rubber cow ride quality. But it is an absolute PITA to install. So, for that matter, is the stock one. Unless you have the magic tool that only Piaggio sells.

you say magic tool. I say two washers with all thread and some bolts, and then apply one of the primary lessons of life: lube, pressure and angle of attack.

also, full agreement on the bushing.

yes.

all kidding aside, let me have a look over it and report back.

but keep in mind that I'm a: in for a penny, in for a pound kinda guy. and if I gotta take something off and it's only a little more work to do the rest and not have to go back in then I'll try and bang that work out at the same time.

but also, the swing arm bearings are a pain in all nine assholes. so just know that going in.

was just looking at that, Malossi store lists 0816707B for various scoots but not the GTS. SIP says it is also for the GTS

It does fit the GTS. I put one in my GT. But in taking out the swingarm to install the thing, I found broken plastic spacers, places where the person who's job it was to add grease was off that day, and ended up buying another swingarm, then installing the puck in the new one. You might find that when you take the swingarm off, there are other components that have also been beat to death.

This is why it's usually recommended to replace the whole swing-arm. Same sort of economics as replacing the whole waterpump cover, rather than just the ceramic seals.

Both. They both have the problematic un-greased needle bearings, which the way you're enjoying your bike are probably rusted to buggery and falling apart.

Stuff the tubes chock-full of grease when you install, whether just the bearings or the whole caboodle. Grease is cheap, and I promise you, you only want to do this once. Razz emoticon

Parts ordering ...

Don't think I'll go the malossi as think I want to avoid the having to push the silent block into the bracket so will replace the whole bracket with oem. 1C002894 appears to be the new 601815?

Also on the Asia/Pacific HPE parts list there are also 2 x 5A000478 and 2 x 1C001341 gasket rings. These are not in other GTS or HPE parts lists?. (They are also in the APAC Primavera/Sprint lists). Think I'll order those as well and if I find them when I pull mine apart then replace else not use.

----

486081 x 2 Engine support silent-block

601815(GTS) or 1C002894(HPE) Silent block including support bracket
599250 Silent-block

598917 x 2 Bushing
5A000478 x 2 Gasket ring (only on APAC HPE?)
600161 x 2 Bearings

597317 x 2 Bushing
1C001341 x 2 Gasket ring (only on APAC HPE?)
56127R x 2 Bearings

In the middle of doing this job myself...not fun. Fortunately all the bearings look good after 78000miles, zero rust so clean and grease only this time around. My silent block is cracked all the way through so replacing that obviously. Funny the old SB came out with 3 whacks. It should be interesting to see if the ride improves as it did not seem bad.

The only YouTube video I could find helped but getting it back together should be interesting. So 1.5 hrs. on the tear down.

Will update later.

How'd you go?

Did yours make any clunk noises on bad bumps before you replaced it?

The one guide i had seen was by cheeky thomas

Do these things go bad w/age regardless of milage ? Is the rubber just kinda inferior or just asking a lot of this bushing depending on road conditions? Also- how much wood could a woodchuck upchuck if a woodchuck could upchuck wood ?

Yes - So the job went OK and I only say Ok because I forgot which way the black tube thingy at the top of my picture went in. I relied on the one video out there and the part where the guy had all the parts laid out it was backwards. Needless to say it took me an hour to figure that out.

Also don't mess around with the vice putting the new SB in the housing until you get it started first by putting the housing on a flat surface then setting the SB on it and putting a 2 by 4 (wood) on top of it and whacking it with a BFH (big F'N hammer) to get it started.

Now as far as the ride, never felt any clunk prior to replacing. I did notice some improvement after replacement but not as much as I thought I would. I do however feel much more confident holding the throttle wide open on the freeway.

All in all this is a very doable job.

I went to a bearing class years ago and the instructor there called the "tool" a FBH! He then went on to relate a story of the time he was teaching a class and just as he mentioned using a FBH he realized there were some young ladies in the class.

He thought fast and "explained" that the FBH referred to one of the hand-out The Fafnir Bearing Handbook where you look for the correct tolerances for bearing fits!
