While visiting a local motorcycle dealership yesterday, I noticed a furry little moth walking around on my helmet face shield. It poked around a bit, then settled in on a small chunk of splattered bug goo, unrolled it's cute little proboscis like an elephant's trunk, and commenced to slurp up smashed cootie slime.

I watched it do this for almost ten minutes, then scooted it off the helmet in a corner of the showroom.

It just struck me as odd.

Lucky you didn't get it inside your helmet. Your trombone playing days would be over.

As Richard Kiley (my favorite nature doc narrator) once said, "where there is something to eat, there is something to eat it").

Man, that's an uneasy combination of satisfying and horrifying.

Nature is full of contradictions.

Beautiful and brutal.
Fragile and resilient.
Heartwarming and heartbreaking.

JBlack,

You truly are a student of deep reflection - watching a bug for ten minutes. Just smack the darn thing.

You never fail to amaze.

Glad we humans don't normally exhibit those behaviors.

It's often the little things underfoot in life that are the most amazing, and unexpected....but to compensate for my smarmy 'nature-boy' tendencies, I strive to maintain a general asshole status elsewhere in life.

Kind of unrelated I suppose, but today, I'm deeply immersed in the amusing spectacle of the trolley bus being hopelessly mired in the mucky-muddy slurry left by yesterday's deluge from the sky. I guess they shouldn't have parked it on the grassy lot.

It ain't going nowhere until Monday at the earliest, when the ground drys out a bit. Two four-wheel drive vehicles strapped to it couldn't budge it, or push it.

No carnivorous moths were sighted during this comedy.

I have an idea what those boards were supposed to do.....and didn't.

Are they actually trying to pull it sideways?

Yes, they had the idea that they might have been able to yank the rear end sideways and out of the muck it was stuck in, but the rear duals had bored down into the mud maybe six inches from their previous attempt at getting it to move, and there was no way that it was going to slide out of there sideways, at least without a big-ass John Deere doing the pulling, not two 4-wheeler trucks with street tires.

Maybe a couple bushels of sand would help, but the boards didn't.
