at first this looked like a slash from something sharp on the road (1st pic) ...

... but then look at how it appears to continue through to a hole at the wear indicator (2nd pic).



PS, yes it's overdue for a replacement, the new tire is sitting next to me

That looks like something pretty sharp made that cut.

Typical road hazard damage rather than a manufacturing issue. It's good you're swapping that out.
