So I ended up buying a neat little Px200e. Seems it has been discussed 16 years ago. It has a few flaws but the body is straight and poking around a bit it also has quite a few nice aspects to it.
Things that are neat:
Malossi 210
Spaco 26 26
Appears to be a SIP box exhaust
Ducati flywheel which indicates, what exactly? I don't know.
Bad issues: tail light that only worked when running suddenly now doesn't work at all. Brake light never worked.
Lower part of cases covered in oil and black gunk. Seems to have a leaking seal is my guess. Rear brake also just suggests it works. No real stopping power. Again, suspected rear seal leak oiling the brakes.
Right turn signal works, left doesn't. Indicator light on headset flashes as normal when switch turned to right, very dim and flashing quickly when switch turned to left.
Headlight only works in one position, either hi or low. No idea since all markings on the switches are rubbed off years ago.
She runs, but obviously very rich. Jets are the little one is a 55-160 and the larger one to the right is a 190. Pulled them and cleaned them using gas and blowing them out using carb spray. Ran a little better but I noticed fuel spraying out of the 190. Is that normal? No clue. Doesn't want to idle. Adjusting screw at the rear is screwed all the way in.
Last thing is I bought it in Newport Beach and live in the mountains at roughly 4600 feet. I know the altitude is part of the issue.
Help!

Where to start with your wiring... I'd have to guess and say the white wire in your headset is bad and affecting everything else down the line (tail light, turn signals, brake light). The wiring harness grinds every time you turn the handlebars so im guessing the original sheathing gave up the ghost. Unscrew the 4 screws holding the headset cover on, lift up gently and disconnect the speedometer cable from the speedo, then flip the plastic cover back like a clamshell. See any cut wires? broken? Loose?

The headlight i'd gamble on the same scenario except the wiring is rubbed raw around the shifter tube or behind the back of the switch itself.

The gunk on the cases is probably Newport Beach sand mixed with gear oil coming out of the clutch cover. The no rear brakes is probably old/ worn rear seal. You'll have to clean and replace the seal. Brake pads might be salvageable. Dont forget a new cotter pin!

Altitude could definitely be messing with things, but I personally havent seen issues below 7,000 FT (Big bear). Wont know for sure until you tell us what jets are below the 190 (Its 3 pieces all pressed together).

If youre not handy, PM me as im looking for some side work

A P that looks that good deserves some figuring out and wrenching for sure. Good luck with your project.

One more thing I forgot to mention, kill switch doesn't work either, neither the key or one the handlebar.
Yes, already pulled the headset cover off today after writing the above to poke around. Looks like more everything is in descent shape except some random green wire poking up through the steering column area. No clue where it is supposed to go. Also saw a random black wire just twisted and taped so I soldered it and shrink wrapped it.
I did notice the large jet came apart into two pieces, does it come apart further into three? I assume there are markings on all the pieces, yes?
I am in Crestline, so way lower than Big Bear. I want to get her going so I can attend Rallys this summer but have a zero budget. Lol
8 couldn't afford it when I bought it but, as you can see, I couldn't pass it up either.
Super rare German import, super rare color combo and as it turned out, lots of upgrades including all I listed and biturbo gas shocks to boot!
I'll pull the jets again and see what each piece says. Isn't there another screwed in below one of them?
Man, it's only been since 1989 since I last worked on one! Lol

Thanks and yes it is. Hoping to get it sorted by the end of June and start to hit up the Rallys!

Wiring is definitely a mess. Green killswitch wire is going to the headlight instead of the cut green wire. Is the black ground wire of the headlight going to a grey wire or is that my imagination?

Are you handy with a multimeter?

Um, I have one, somewhere. Do I know how to use one? Mah, not really.
Lol
Back when I had these things Nyle or Big John or Troy Proschle used to work on them. I was/am kind of useless. I guess there is no time like the present to learn though.

OK, getting antsy about getting it running properly in the middle of winter. Searched around and found my multimeter and replaced the battery in it. Turned right on.

Currently the bike starts and runs. Taillight is inoperable and kill switches are useless. Have to either stall out the engine by putting it in gear or switch the fuel off.

Like I said, have multimeter ready to go. What's my next move?

Thanks

go to scooterhelp.com and search wiring diagrams for your year P. Look in your headset and figure out every wire that's not the same. There's going to be a few.

Then I'd tackle the killswitch. Either use the existing cut green wire or pull a new wire through and crimp terminals on each end.

Then I'd figure out the tail light.

That's the thing though. She's quite a bit of a mystery. No one really knows the year and the wiring is not "normal" in the least. It was imported, supposedly, from Germany possibly and the year on the title cannot be the year of the bike being it is a PX and has a Ducati flywheel and ignition.
Add to that I'm a total dork and have no idea how to read a wiring diagram. I guess it's time to learn? Lol
The bike is a rare "Rainbow" px200e (it's white with blue cowls, front fender, horn cover and headset cover stock)and the switches on the handlebars is somewhat reversed from normal American Vespas. Someone put, as I remember, 1976 on the title when first imported. Lol The first year of a P was 77 to give you an idea. Total pooch screw for someone like me.
I'll check out the website you suggest but not sure it will help me.

Get the vin (stamped in the frame right next to the engine) and google vin lookup and it'll show a scooterhelp link. That should tell you the year which can hopefully help you find the correct wiring diagram.

Stamped on a badge on the leg shield where you put your feet and again by the rear cowl mount behind the engine.

The bike could be an Arcobaleno sold in Germany only with the blue/white Rainbow configuration. Again, this only makes things more difficult from my research.

Wiring diagram PX200E

Check out this post and see if any of these wiring diagrams match up to what you have batteryside.

I ended up buying a new wiring harness for my P200. The new harness was like $60 and it wasn't that hard to install. Many of the original wires were stripped inside the tunnel.

You would be doing a lot of the same kind of work repairing the existing wiring anyway. Getting the new wires through the headset and handlebars is probably the hardest part…except with a new harness you would only be doing it once. It can be a lot easier in the long run than dealing with someone else's fuckery.

Yeah, that's probably a great idea but which wiring harness is the question? There are different ones and mine isn't standard, that's for sure. Did you remove the engine first or just the horn cover and pull through the new one using the old one as a leash?

Usually you would be removing the gas tank, horn cast, rear brake pedal and head set. You don't have to remove the engine. Check which wires you have coming from the stator and what wires you have on the battery side. That would give you an idea of which wiring diagram applies to your model.

You could also troubleshoot individual things if pulling all the wiring is more than you want to attempt at this point. Usually the ground connections get crusty and the wires that go through the handlebars have breaks in the insulation. Look for stuff on the battery side to see if it is stock. The green kill switch wire often falls apart.

I installed my harness on a freshly painted disassembled scooter. I wouldn't recommend pulling too much apart.

Pics of what you got coming out of the stator and the battery side would help.

I have a VW bus with a rat's nest of wiring under the dash. You have to be a contortionist to get to it.

I take photos of the wiring after cleaning the wires so I can see the original colors. I print out the wiring diagram in color and blow up the photos on the computer with a cup of coffee so I can figure it out in comfort. This avoids a lot of flailing around. By the time I get back to the bus or bike, I am looking for one wire and one thing to try to fix.
