We have a 2008 Piaggio Fly 50 ´Malossi´ ´Fly 4 Tempi´.

Some research I have done shows that some Piaggio dealers sell a Malossi upgrade racing kit. However the ads I have seen only shows pictures of the parts, but does not list the actual parts. One comment on the Piaggio dealer listing for the Malossi upgrade racing kit stated that the Malossi parts were actually better quality than the OEM Piaggio parts due to Malossi's dedication and commitment to racing.

What is the significance of the Malossi name on a Piaggio Fly 50?
What is the significance of the 4 Tempi name on a Piaggio Fly 50?
Is the Piaggio Malossi Fly 50 somewhat souped up to be faster than the normal Piaggio Fly 50?
If so, what parts were replaced?

Hi,
4 tempi is Italian for 4 times which means it is a 4 stroke engine.
All of the more recent Piaggio engines are 4 stroke due to emissions regulations.

Malossi is an aftermarket tuning company that makes go faster parts including for Piaggio bikes and others. This includes 70cc kits, exhausts, variators, clutches, air filters, cdi , carbs etc.

Your one looks like it has the stock exhaust? so it's probably just had a Malossi variator put in it which is a common tweak. It might make it a little quicker with a higher top speed.

It's possible it's stock and someone just put the stickers on it.

GF350,
That information helps answer a lot! Thanks!

Here is a closeup of the branding on the exhaust and the extra parts that came with it in December of 2020. Is the air filter in the picture meant for improved performance?

I am not all that acquainted with scooters. What is a Variator?

The "Flat Surface" speed is 35 MPH. So I quickly agree with you that it does not have the full Malossi upgrades. According to my research fully upgraded Malossi have a top speed of 45 MPH.

Hi,
It looks like someone was experimenting with the pod filter and different carb jets.
Personally I'd leave it with the standard air box it has on, I don't think the air box won't be restricting it much on a standard 50cc.

If it has the Malossi variator like the one below it will be behind the side cover on the engine (marked in red on picture).

GF350,
The only reason I am wanting to confirm any sort of Malossi modifications is because I would like to try and sell it. We bought this for my wife and the seat height is too tall for her. I am retired from the commercial truck sales business, trucks, tractors and trailers, not pickups and I can honestly say that I never lied to anyone about anything I ever sold.

Falsus in uno; Falsus in omnibus.
False in one thing; false in all things.

I sleep well at night and also know that I can face my Maker, in whatever amount of time I have left on this earth, about all of my dealings with His children. I would rather lose the sale of this scooter than to mislead anyone into believing that they were buying something that really is not what I say it is.

Attached are some pictures with only the minimum of the cowling removed. If you want me to fully remove all of the cowling to get pictures of more than this in order to verify Malossi modifications I will. However I do have a scope camera that I can use to go in behind the cowling for further details.

Rather than to continue to harass you about Malossi modifications, is there possibly a way to verify this information by VIN?, a number I saw on the gearbox?, or some other identifications somewhere else?

I am Grateful!

There is no such thing as a Piaggio Malossi Fly 4 tempi. That's a whole lot of useless stuff sitting on the seat. Unless they have the Piaggio tags on the auto choke wires, those are likely the cheap Amazon qmb139 carbs that don't work on Piaggio engines. And there's jet kit that someone soon realized wouldnt' make the cheap carbs work on the Piaggio engine. The exhaust is some aftermarket brand that has nothing to do with Malossi. If the coil on the seat fits, it's a two valve four stroke, by far the slowest engine Piaggio has come up with in the modern era. From the way you describe the performance, it's a stock Piaggio Fly 2V that someone tried to make go faster. They used exactly one Malossi sticker to transform it into a Piaggio Malossi Fly, and that's not the sticker that comes with the variator, so that would be a surprise to find, and gave you a bunch of stuff they didn't know what else to do with. If they had two of those stickers, they could have made the word Malossi the same color on both sides of the scooter. If it has the red Malossi air filter, they might have gotten the belt tuning kit, which is a belt, the filter, rollers and torsion controller. If you're getting the idea it goes 35 mph from the speedometer, it likely still has the Moped State CDI, which keeps them down to around 30.
I would take off the stickers, put the big box of useless carbs away, clean it up and sell it as a very clean Piaggio Fly 50. Because that's what it is.

Motovista,
That is valuable information and I appreciate you taking the time to share it.

In your opinion what would be the value of a 2008 Piaggio Fly 50 with 600 miles that, in my personal opinion, really does run very well?

Thanks!

If it only has a malossi sticker on the left side it will always be pulling to the right.

Motovista,
I used to SportChassis Freightliner pickups to wealthy people so I have used the slang of pricing them and selling them for; "a Buck", "a Buck & a Dime", "a Buck and a Quarter", and such meaning one hundred thousand dollars or more.

I apologize for my ignorance as to "12-15".
12 to 15 what?
$12.00 to $15.00 dollars as in something to scrap?
or
$1,200.00 to $1,500.00 dollars as in something halfway decent to own?

Thanks!

And don't sell the big box of crap with it. That's a sure sign that someone got in there, and that's not always what people want.
