Speedometer went out soon went through the PIA of replacing it. Then speedometer still didn't work. Then I looked and saw that green plastic tip that fits into the speedometer cluster snapped.

Looks like this happened to the 1st cable I replaced and now this 2nd one.

Seems the gear in the cluster is stuck or something.

Do I need a whole new Speedo cluster now?

Anyone else experienced this and have an easier and cheaper fix than new cluster?

How can I be sure?

If not screwed in all the way, it can twist and snap like that?

Can you use a small screwdriver to turn the speedometer input shaft?

It's all closed up and I don't have it in me to open up for a 3rd time.

Just wondering if anyone has seen the speedo cable break in this way and had any theories

My SH cable has the cable formed into a square. Is that a plastic piece on the end of that cable? Wha? emoticon
Check the old cable for signs of pinching. If that cable end is plastic, then a pinched cable or the connecting point has a jam.

Yep unfortunately that is the square piece in my photo. The old cable snapped in the same way. No idea what happened. Speedometer was working and all of a sudden it want.

I replaced the old cable myself and it snapped in the same exact way. It's possible I did something wrong when I installed the cable but why would a cable snap in that way? Looks like cable spun from the drive at the wheel and the speedometer assembly was stuck so cable snapped

But why in the fog does a speedometer assembly suddenly freeze??

Ugh anyway I'll take to the dealership

I had a similar situation on a Honda many years ago. The bearing (or bushing) in the speedo head was dry, and would seize, breaking the cable. I got a little lube in there, and problem was solved.

Ahhh ok. That makes sense. Maybe that's what it is.

Did you just spray lube in the part where the speedo cable would attach to the speedo itself? Or you took apart the unit?

It was a long time ago...I don't remember what I did exactly. I know that I pried the metal trim off the unit to get access, so there's that. While I was in there, I turned the odometer back to zero for the heck of it. No chicanery involved, and when I sold it, I told the buyer the real mileage.
