Facepalm emoticon Hi all, I have a vespa Sprint 150 2015 that seems like it needs a new wiring harness. Seems like the previous owner stored it somewherre that mice got into and were nibbling on various wires. The effect of that now is that the left turn signal turns on but doesn't bink, the headlight and horn are intermittent, and the speedometer doesnt work. This weekend I opened it up and tried patching up some of the damage with electric tape and things worked better for a bit, but then the olld problems returned. Vespa Brooklyn told me a few months ago that the whole wiring harness needs to be replaced and I think they're probably right. Pictures attached. I feel like after opening the bike and tracing everything this week I'm probably able to replace the harness myself(I'm an audio engineer so I know electronics a bit), Vespa Brooklyn told me it would be $2k lol.

This seems to be the right harness, but it looks like there are a few shorts in it I would have to patch, or places where I would have to replace the terminals.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on this? Am I crazy to try and do this or should I try and get rid of the bike and get a new one? Pictures of the damage attached.

Thanks

G

Replacing a whole wiring harness is quite a lot of work. If you can find all the trouble areas, I would patch it in right. Soldering and shrink fit tubing goes a long way here - and will take a lot less time (and money) than a whole rewire job.

Also there may be a difference between the 50 cc harness you are looking at on Ebay and a 150.

There's videos on YouTube from Vespa motorsport showing how to completely strip down a Vespa sprint.

My gut feeling is that this won't be financially viable for a shop to change. If however you are mechanically minded and have enough free time, then it might be a worthwhile project.

that harness won't work for what you've got. 50 and 150 wiring is entirely different.

repairs like this come down to time vs money. if you've got more time than money or vice-versa then that usually determines the course of action. I mean, sort of. it's more like time/money and an additional component of skill thrown in.

anyway, it seems like you've got the skill portion covered so I'd say if you have more time you're willing to spend than money, I'd pull and repair the harness. a quicker and less maddening endeavor would be replacing the harness outright, but then you're looking at buying a harness ($$) or tracking down a useable one ($+time).

either way, be careful on purchasing harnesses a lot of them come from totaled out bikes that are insurance write-offs from flood damage or theft recovery. if you look closely at the one in the ebay ad you can see the tell tale signs of corrosion on the terminals. and theft recovery harnesses are usually jacked ass from the crack heads attempts to hot wire these bikes.

Can somebody tell me what this is on the right side of the bike? Wires on this seem to be totally chewed off.
