I'll let someone answer in terms of mileage, but I will say that my mechanic stated that the pads must be removed at 2 years / 6200 miles. The callipers should be checked / greased and the brake fluid should be changed. This is part of the normal service schedule.
As the cost of the pads themselves are relatively low, it makes sense to replace them at the 6200 mile / 2 year mark, regardless of how much wear they have. |

Thanks for responding.
I wonder why there's a 2 year limit on them even if they weren't used much. |

If the brakes aren't used much, the calliper can seize. Brake fluid also absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and the lever will become spongy / less effective over time.
Brake pads can also sometimes split or delaminate from the backing plate, which can be extremely dangerous. I've probably replaced more brakes on vehicles from a lack of use, than actually wearing them out. |

Totally agree on the fluid replacement and the calliper service, but pads at 10,000km seems wasteful of resources. My dealer checks mine every service and have permission to replace if necessary. Never put pads in the GT200, my GTS300 has 27000km on it and I don't anticipate they will change them at 30,000km.
Cars get 100,000km from pads, they are a wear item. Can't remember the last time I heard of a pad coming off a backing plate. |

I had a brake shoe delaminate from the backing on a 1966 Vespa Sprint. But it was 53 years old at the time.

Fluid should be replaced at two years, but the brake pads only have to be removed and inspected.
New brake pads are around £7 here (9 USD / 13 AUD) so usually worth putting a fresh set in if you've gone to all the trouble of removing them. |

I finally replaced brake pads on one of my Vespa GTs last year.
The scooter was Rocket, my 2006 that I bought new in late 2005. I was a bit upset that the front brake pads only lasted 107,000 miles. After changing them, I bought new pads for my other two GTs. But I checked one of them and found plenty of pad left on the fronts. They each have 41,000 and around 30,000 miles. I had to change the rear brake pads on my Xmax recently, after two weeks riding in the mountains around Asheville, NC. The rear pads were completely worn at 31,000 miles. Bill |

Vespa gts 250, 2013 model, 35000 km. I have now changed the front and rear pads. The mechanic said exactly the following: There is no ABS in the 2013 model. Apply both brakes at the same time. Now the rear brake holds very well and stops immediately. But I made the front brake weaker. Because the front brake should not be so hard that it slips and falls. Do you think it's true? Now it stops when the rear brake is applied immediately. But the front brake only slows it down. So it doesn't stop suddenly when you apply the front brake. This prevents me from slipping on my non-ABS Vespama. Do you think this makes sense? Or do I need to disassemble it again and make it hold better? Or will the front and rear brake grip change after 100-200 km? I wrote it with Google Translate, sorry.

Front brakes are responsible for up to 70% of all braking, so should feel twice as strong as the rears.

It's very wasteful sending perfectly serviceable brake pads to landfill ahead of their time. But definitely worth giving the business end of the brakes a good inspection and service regularly.

I would use some brake cleaner spray to ensure there is no oil or anything on the pads. Then you need to hard bed the pads. this is done by hard short braking about 10 times. if you are not comfortable bedding the pads have your service tech do it.
Fronts are a bit more effort to bed than rears for some folks as they or have never used full hard braking because it can be easy to lock up the front wheel.
