Recently bought a 1979 P200 (s/n 29643) that did not have a battery installed. When I installed one, the tail light (not brake) and the neutral light illuminated with the key off which I'm sure will drain the battery.

Also, the ignition switch is on/off only and the wiring diagram I puled off scooterhelp indicates a three position switch (run/off/park). Is it possible that the switch is the problem?

TIA

Early double yellow harnesses use a 4 pole switch and it doesn't have a park feature.

You can make that 4 pole switch work. I dont know if you can even find new 8 pole switches anymore.

As far as your lighting, I think a few things are hooked up wrong. Can you open up the headset and take a birds eye view of the wiring? The keyswitch connections look correct, so Im thinking its somewhere else in the headset causing the lights to be on with the key off.

On a different note, your green kill wire is toast. In order to have the key shut off the ignition, youre going to need to run a new wire through the frame and connect it to the CDI. Its a very common problem that only occurs with the green killswitch wires on P series Vespas. If you use the search bar, you'll see plenty of threads on the Green Wire of Death!

I have attached better pics of the headset

Thanks for the pics. Can you remove the battery box and take a picture of the wires at the voltage regulator/ turn signal flasher. Those work their way to the keyswitch and might be hacked/ spliced into causing your lights on while OFF.

I definitely have some weird splicing on the black wires to the battery!

Bingo! I knew something was off there. So, the previous owner replaced the correct voltage regulator/ rectifier with a generic model. Then, they spliced together the hot wire to the turn signal relay which provides power to the white/green wire up in the headset. That keeps the lights on, even with the keyswitch off.

In all honesty, unless youre an electrical wizard, I would buy the correct regulator and put it back how it was. That way you know its solid and reliable. I belive this one is the correct one for your scooter, but you can confirm this by opening up the junction box on the top of your motor. Tell me if there's two yellow wires or just one plugged into your harness.

Fantastic! I can't thank you enough! I would probably never have figured that out.
Looks like two yellows to me!

The purple wire from the turn signal relay needs to be disconnected from the red wire.
