Hi all,
I'm in the process of rebuilding 2017 Vespa 250 gts engine. I have question related with timings marks for valve adjustment. Looking into YouTube videos and Haynes or workshop manual they all referring to 4v mark as reference point. Surprise is that on my wheel there are no marks 2v or 4v.
As you may see on the photo there is p'ms mark ( no clue what does it mean) and line (over small bean) Can you help me with understanding what is the correct position?
Thank you in advance

I agree. Looked at it again and the OEM one from scooterwest and definitely not OEM.

Begs the question, why rebuild? What is the history of this scooter?

vespa never made a 2017 gts 250 or a 2016.
what is your vin number and lets see some pics of the scooter to identify it for you.

Are you sure they haven't been made in Vietnam or India?

Why not? An enterprising person or company might well do so as long as they meet Euro spec.

I don't know. I actually assume it was a typo and it's a 2007, but I don't know whether or not they made a 250 in Vietnam or India in 2017 - do you know for sure what Vespa models they've made out there?

Whatever year it is, it certainly looks like the I in the PIMS stamping is in the same place as the 4V line in the factory model.

Production date clarification:
Registration date I've mentioned is a date of first registration. According to CoC - production date is 03/2014. It is European model with 10k km on the clock. All parts seem original.

that's part of the problem, VESPA/PIAGGIO did NOT make a GTS 250 in 2014 or 2017 or 2016 all these dates don't make sense for a GTS 250.

Please post the manufactures vehicle codes and PICTURES of the scooter. Body pics/ engine pics both sides.
The timing gear you originally posted is NOT a vespa/piaggio part.

They actually did 250s till 2016 (at least in Europe) with the new speedometer cause they had leftover engines. Markings are fine on the cog (it's OEM, made in China), you align the small hole with a marking that's on the head…

in the EU doesn't the year of the bike be determined by the year it was sold new, not necessarily the year it was produced from the factory?

No. If it was let's say a 2006 (it couldn't be with this speedo) it should have been preregistered way before because the conformity issued upon manufacturing expires at some point. And again, 250s were produced till 2016 in Europe…

that the problem as I cant find any info on 250's being manufactures after 2011 from Piaggio, as this is the time frame they went to the 278cc 300's.
Now having carryover stock in warehouses of the 250's does make sense. Also having dealers having new old stock sitting around till they finally got sold a yr or more later.

When the 300's came out the 250's were not wanted.

Generally if you stick your VIN in here then you'll get the year

http://recall.piaggiogroup.com/

If you don't see the year with English selected, try again with Italian selected. Seems a weird thing to say but just do it

another anomaly is the timing gear the op posted is BRAND new no marks of any chain wear. kind of strange with a scoot that has mileage on it.

@SaFiS- thanks, I aligned it as you proposed ( small hole is aligning with small hole in housing)
To end up discussion about production year you may see info from Vespa recall page below (model year 2014).

so first post it was a 2017 now its down to a 2014 but the EU vin does not specify yr in the vin number like the USA vin does. the year it was placed into service was 2014 which is not the year of manufacture from the factory.

The year it was placed into service was 2017, as above. That was stated as being the date of first registration, although manufactured in March 2014.

If that was in the UK for instance, the owner might well refer to it as a '17 scooter if it was first registered between March and September 2017.

so Piaggio was making old 250's while making the new 278cc 300's and selling BOTH to dealers from 2012 thru 2016?

ya think that would be a bit confusing on the assembly line at the factory. Lets build old scooters next to the NEW ones we want dealers to buy as well.

find me a dealer to make that statement they were buying 250's made the same time the new 300's were produced for a couple years after 2012.

Firstly, they would have carried on making them while they had a large number of parts still on the shelves. There's always some overlap.

Then Piaggio would have insisted the dealers accept a certain number of 250's if they wanted to sell 300's. It's that sort of insistence that caused a collapse in the number of Piaggio dealers in the UK - the dealers wouldn't put up with that sort of thing, and went on to sell Sym, Kymco or Chinese scooters etc instead. My dealer in the UK gave Piaggio two fingers a few years back - they'll happily service them, but refuse to carry any for sale.

It also accounts for late registration after manufacture in this case - eventually the dealer would have marked it right down just to get it off the floor.

well Jim I did some more digging and Piaggio did sell the 250's in 2014, I looked under sip web site and they list 06-14

also looked in this forum and found some old threads that folks had 2014's

So I publicly apologize to the op and to you, that they were produced thru 2014.

Unless this is an entirely aftermarket scooter, Piaggio sold the 250 GTS in other markets long after they quit selling them in the US.
Rather than trying to get rid of old parts, I think the reason the offered this one in other markets has to do with local laws. Peugeot and Malaguti both bought this engine in the 250cc version, and didn't buy the 300cc one.
