I got this 71 Rally 180 with a title for $2100 8 months ago. I like fixing them up, but I don't keep them. There were crash bars on this one, but no rust.
So I adopted it with the idea that I could fix her up and sell her, maybe.
The crash bars were a problem, fairly large holes drilled into the legshield and in the floor.
I had them welded up and I was delighted with the results. But the front fender, and the cowls, were both filled with bondo, and the cowls were from a Rally 200. So I searched for replacements and miraculously SIP had the cowls and Scooter Mercato had the fender, and a Rally seat to boot, the original seat was turning to dust.
I matched the paint and rattle canned the fender, cowls and welded up holes, not too bad.
I disassembled the motor and it was in great nick, but I redid the seals and the clutch, and engine mounts just because it seemed like the good move.
Scooter is running now, the tires look good, I did also replace all of the cables, the throttle cable gave me fits, but I got it fitted.
Scooter runs nicely, had the choke clip in back-ass-wards but now it's fine.
Horn didn't work, took that apart and everything looks okay,…eventually ( 2 weeks later) I ordered a new battery, (the old one tested fine) and after spraying the original horn with WD-40 and cleaning it up, the horn is working fine.
So I'm selling this old scoot, is it original paint? Not so sure about that. Is it an honest 1971 Rally 180? Yes, I do believe it is.
