I'm rebuilding the rear shock on my dirtbike and had to grind off a peened nut. I did this with the utmost care, but the threads on the shock shaft required chasing.

My neighbor who lent me the tap and die kit came over and offered to help. I figured he was more experienced seeing how it was his kit. He had me grid more material off the threaded rod in order to get the die started.

The die wobbled inside the holding tool and the below photo is the result. Upon a closer observation, the screw that holds the die in the tool failed.

Is this salvageable with a better die? If not I'm effed.

Yes - but first go around it lots of times with a needle file to get that first thread getting to look OK-ish by eyeball - then use the die.

I don't know if you have enough thread left but I rough sand in a circular motion to chamfer the edge then follow up with the brownish orange scotchbrite disc. Nut will go right on after that. Motosport or Rocky Mountain ATV will have that bolt for you.

Thanks for the support everyone.
I slept on the problem, got up, drank coffee and got after it.

Nut threads on nicely. Should have enough threads to lock everything down. I'll tidy it up a bit more before reassembly.

Thanks again.
