Hi all
I have an original Australian delivered Vespa 1964 GL that I am in the process of bringing back to original condition. The scooter was last registered in 1994 and judging by the condition it has been sitting gathering dust and rust ever since. Am I correct that the 64 GL had aluminium crimped leg shield trim ? assuming i am correct where is the best place to purchase the original trim. Also does any one have advice on the best brand of crimp /trim tool to purchase to fit the trim?
Regards David H from Melbourne Australia

Welcome to the forum.

Pictures are always welcome here! Are you sure it had the trim originally?

Start with GPS Imports mate. If you don't find it on their site, contact Brenton. He will know if it's available.

Outside of Oz, try SIP or Scooter-Center in Germany, Mauro Pascoli if you're desperate.

I am assuming my scooter originally had aluminium leg shield trim based on old photos and research i have done on the model. When I got the scooter it had a plastic aftermarket replacement which would not have been original.

Is there evidence on the the scooter that there really was one fitted to yours originally? Piaggio had a bit of a cavalier approach to "correct" parts in different markets sometimes depending on the day of the week. Or so it seems anyway.

Try this group and ask other GL owners if theirs had the trim. There's a lot knowledge there - https://www.facebook.com/groups/171755536248935
You could also ask Daniel Rogers on FB what his experience has been, he's had a lot of original Oz-delivered scooters go through his hands. He's based in QLD.

When I rebuilt my VBA I replaced the cracked leg shield trim with an original one from Piaggio, it has been a pain even owning the tool to roll it back to the legshield shape, I damaged the fresh new pain, this was VERY frustrating, after so many hours of preparation before paint/clear.

I got so pissed of that I promised myself to never do that again ! I'm currently rebuilding a VNB that has the same original leg shield trim but I will use a 2 parts trim held with small screws.

It not original spec but looks good (imo) and saves my nerves
