Hello all,

several years ago the glass fell off my headlight, because of course it did, and after years I finally got a new one. The new one came with a new bulb mount. Swapped everything out and after biking over to the hardware store to get the missing bolt, because of course one was missing, I got it together and immediately burned the bulb out. I have two new bulbs on order but guessing I had the violet/brown wires mixed up. Here is a photo of how it was. The violet was attached to a 58B and brown to 58A. I have the other violet attached to the hot (positive) of the small bulb and black I'm guessing is ground.

Could you please email me the complete wiring diagram? Otherwise I'd need to ask all sorts of questions about regulators etc. I'll add a Stella folder to our archive of manuals.

With that we can make an educated guess as to what happened.

OK - thanks for the wiring diagram - now at https://manuals.wotmeworry.org.uk/Stella/

The lights are all 12V DC, and they should work as soon as the ignition is switched on. If a bulb blew, it can only because it was about to fail anyway, so I wouldn't worry about that. Your wiring looks fine - whether the two violet wires and the brown are the right way round can be determined by whether the light switch and Hi/Lo beam switch do what you're expecting. No harm should come if these are not quite right, just the wrong bulb would light up.

Yes, the black is definitely the ground that goes to the outside of the bulbs.

So I reckon you've got it AOK, and the new bulbs should work fine!

Oh - I'll add - if the bulb was fine when you switched on, but blew when you started the engine, then it might be the case that your regulator has died and and giving out 17V or more. However the battery would have taken a beating if that was the case and would probably have died as well after a few weeks of abuse. I add this 'just in case'...
