Straight to the crux:
What helmet, if any (where allowed), do you sport on your NSM?

Mine is older RF 1200 I think, maybe an early 1400. Off on 2 wheels, on with my lid. Style points no longer are something I strive for when it comes to safety. Seriously looking at a bright green airbag vest that screams Cool!

Arai Signet X for me - need the long oval shape but the helmet is super comfy and worth the premium.

Yes, but... I mean an NSM Vespa 10 or even 8" wheels, drum brakes makes safety a bit of a relatively weakened argument no?! I just rode my 200 from the one mountain village to the one I live. 38 degrees C. so wearing crocs, shorts, t-shirt no gloves. Add véry bumpy worn smooth tarmac and overheated dodgy drivers. Did wear a modern flip down visor Premier grp open faced helmet. Not for safety but to not draw unwanted attention from the plod as the periodic inspection ran out last month. For sáfety would have worn a way better vented head cooling cycling lid. Going not much faster anyway. 38 is relatively cool in Juli - August btw. Seen 42 last week. August can get hotter still. Was orange alert. Hence August is when Spain is all but closed for the summer. |

I am Jack's cracked skull:
Seriously, this is not a good idea... but it's my honest answer and my SOP. If just riding in the residential neighborhood or up to the bodega I am probably wearing just a skateboard/bike helmet. There is a big chance it isn't even buckled in place. When I get out on real roads for extended city driving. I wear a real 3/4 moto helmet. Then, when it's highway riding at WOT and top speeds, I will wear my full face. Also... I hate the cold. So in the dead of winter you might find me in a full face on any given ride -neighborhood/city/highway- because it's more comfortable keeping the cold out. |

Man, I remember back in the day going up the grapevine when the Santa Anas were blowing, on a Suzuki 450t with NO helmet, a pack of smokes in my back pocket, and a baggy of weed in my front pocket WOT! And I'm still alive - amazing.....
Now I wear flip up full face Scorpion EXO AT-950 without the visor, white.... ⚠️ Last edited by qascooter on UTC; edited 1 time

Every get off that's resulted in injury has usually been at low speeds. It's always " I'm only going down the street", etc then Wham-O.
I've got a Frankenstein stitch chin and some missing/chipped teeth from screwing around on one of my old P200s. In hindsight, looking cool wasn't worth it. Helmet wouldn't have prevented the crash, but it would have saved thousands in dental bills over the years and I'd be a little less ugly without the scar. Once I'm back on the road, full face for me. Always wore one in the dirt, no reason not to on road.

Been wearing Arai for probably 15 years.
I'm not the police but I will given an opinion having been hit by cars three times in the last 20 years, if you enjoy fucking and drinking rootbeer out of your mouth, wear a full face. those two things cannot be done without a chin. ⚠️ Last edited by GickSpeed on UTC; edited 1 time

Schuberth C3 Pro. Probably time to consider replacing it, but I really like it and have replaced the neck curtain and visor to keep it going a bit longer.
Worth the dosh. Using a PacTalk Bold for mesh comms.

There is this phenomena called Peltzman effect.
Imo best understood in terms of horse riding. I know a great many lady riders who would not dream of jumping their steed without a back protector. Makes sense no? Yet riding a horse stark naked is way safer than jumping with full protective gear. |

just had an interesting conversation with my love. She is an MTB cycling champion and confirms that she is more likely to take a tumble when wearing a helmet than when not. Risk behaviour illustrated.
Which brings me to ´risk´: ´Risk¨= the likelihood of a mishap x the seriousness of the consequences. Imo Birdsnest words it well. Horses for courses. On a side note I want to point to ´high viz´ clothing. Being seen is only very slightly depending on being highly visible. It almost entirely depends on the one lóóking. It is wayWAY safer to ride a scooter/motorbike assuming nobody will séé you than thinking you are high viz. Mind you; I have ridden motorbikes, sidecars as a life style for décades, raced them, got myself a medal in the IoM TT and.... on the street was clobbered from behind by a van while I was waiting for pedestrians crossing the zebra. Was wearing a high viz vest, even had my brake light on. ´I did not see you!´ A lighter helmet would have hurt my neck less.... |

anyway, what Í use depends on the use:
On the 1936 Nimbus Type C with sidecar I use a pudding basin model. On the Vespa Primavera a modern open face Premier GRP. On the P200E depends; pottering about -> pudding basin, beyond that the Premier. Only véry occasionally, like going to the local watering hole op the road wear a skateboard one. Always eye protection; sunglasses, goggles or flip down visor. |
