I really hope this solves your problem. I found that the tabs on the early P cases were not as accurate for getting the bearing to align compared to the PX and LML cases. I had to tap the bearing a little here and there to align it and get the crank turning smoothly. You're doing it right though…making sure everything turns smoothly instead of slapping it together and hoping for the best. Consider all the case splitting an investment in the skill set. The practice will serve you well for future engine building.

not been here for a while
i would be peening the rivet heads on engine casing side of your cushdrive gear they seem to be a bit high

It spins freely now after using the clips instead of the circlip that I mistakenly installed.
