I'm changing the coolant on my 2009 Piaggio MP3 400 IE and I notice that the coolant is green and as far as I've read this takes pink coolant. I believe that the previous owner when doing maintenance put in the wrong coolant and I'd like to put in the right coolant but I've read that when they mix you could run into some issues.

Should I go ahead and put in the pink coolant or should I go buy some green?

Thinking also maybe several drain and fills with pink coolant should do that job as well.

The colour is completely irrelevant! Different manufacturers have the same basic coolant but with different colour additives.

Just go by the spec. when replacing or topping up. Peak Global is fine.

I totally disagree with jim's statement on coolant colors.

google coolant color

they are standard colors industry wide for specific applications.

There might be in the US - but not elsewhere for sure!

LOL, oil from Switzerland. $25 for a quart of coolant is highway robbery.

I've been using VW G12 coolant without any issues, meets the spec and it is a fraction of the price.

You can get it from any VW/Audi dealer

You might say "those crazy russians", but what if I tell you that G11 antifreese can be of any color?

Again, same goes for G12 with any quantity of pluses and not only Russian.

So the color means literally nothing. More: the color now is added just to sell it to you, to make you "sure" it can be added to the one you already have in your engine.

And yes, you should not mix G11 and G12, but G12++ can be added to both G11 and G12.

do as you wish and good luck

not my words but just 1 example

Search for: Is it OK to mix green and pink antifreeze?
What happens if you mix dex-cool with green antifreeze?
Dex-Cool and traditional anti-freeze don't mix well. When mixed, these two products will react forming a gel that can prevent your engine from cooling properly. It can even damage multiple components of your cooling system which then must be flushed or replaced which is expensive.

OK, no dex-cool mixing with normal antifreeze - we all got that message ages ago. Now dex-cool may have a particular colour - but they don't have a patent or copyright or monopoly on it!

I just found out the colour of the coolant indicates the following based on Aria AI, and my Piaggio MP3 250 has the red coolant:

The differences between green coolant and red coolant primarily stem from their chemical compositions, formulations, and specific uses. Here's a breakdown of the key distinctions:

1. Chemical Composition
Green Coolant
Typically contains ethylene glycol as the base.
Uses inorganic additives (IAT - Inorganic Acid Technology) for corrosion resistance.
Red Coolant
Often formulated with ethylene glycol or propylene glycol.
Utilizes organic additives (OAT - Organic Acid Technology) for improved long-term protection.
2. Corrosion Inhibitors
Green Coolant

Contains traditional corrosion inhibitors, which may be effective for a shorter lifespan.
Generally requires more frequent changes (every 2 years or so).
Red Coolant

Features advanced organic inhibitors that provide longer-lasting protection.
Typically has a longer life, often recommended for changes every 5 years or more.
3. Performance Characteristics
Green Coolant

Offers effective freeze protection and basic corrosion prevention.
Suitable for older vehicles and systems that require traditional coolant formulations.
Red Coolant

Provides better heat transfer properties and superior corrosion protection.
Ideal for modern engines that operate at higher temperatures.
4. Compatibility
Green Coolant

May not be compatible with vehicles designed to use red coolant, especially those with aluminum components.
Mixing different types of coolants can lead to gel formation and reduced effectiveness.
Red Coolant

Often recommended for newer vehicles with aluminum engines and components.
Generally not compatible with green coolant due to the different additive technologies.
5. Visual Appearance
Green Coolant

Typically bright green in color, though variations exist.
Red Coolant

Generally bright red or pink, signaling its different formulation.

Conclusion
When choosing between green and red coolant, it's crucial to consider the specific requirements of your vehicle. Always refer to the owner's manual for recommendations on coolant types and ensure compatibility to avoid potential issues
