Hi everyone,

First post here. Found this forum while looking for technical info. I am the owner of a Piaggio Carnaby Cruiser 300ie living in Spain. I know it is not a Vespa but I think given its retro appearance and shared engine with the Vespa GTS 300 it could be described as the 16 inch wheeled Vespa sister.

Sadly I am currently facing a problem. My throttle cable broke as well as some internals of the throttle body. The mechanic of the local official Piaggio dealer told me the parts aren't available anymore and they won't work on non original or second hand parts. A local multibrand mechanic is willing to help me and told me I could look for that part in a moto scrapyard. Sadly they have the throttle body but not the correct cable for it.

So my question is the following: given many 250/300/350 vespa and piaggio models share variants of the same engine, could I score the throttle + cableset made for a newer model like a Vespa GTS300, Piaggio MP3 300 or Beverly 300/350 and install it on my Carnaby or I may encounter some compatibility issues? What do you think?

Thanks,
Thomas

Use your VIN to find the correct exploded view to check the original Piaggio spare part number for the parts you need. Then you should be able to find it via Google.

Not sure if this is the right one (please doublecheck compatibility):

Makes sense, but I guess a slightly longer one should not be a problem if you manage to route the housing correctly right (applying my knowledge of derailleur and brake bicycle cabling here) ?

Too bad there is no picture of it but the model, year and VIN are matching. I think I will give it a try. Thanks a lot, couldn't find it on french and spanish online shops.

I also came accross this one but according to the picture it is a single cable while mine is a double cable system.

That's why I recommend to take a look at the explosion drawings...

Before you order, it is best to ask the store in writing, use a translator or try in English...

Ya. Ich spreche ein bisschen deutsch.
I learned german at school and lived 18 years in Switzerland, albeit in the french speaking part of it I still had a little bit of interaction with the german dialects speaking part

Does your scooter have an immobilizer? I have no idea about the old Piaggio, but normally the throttle body contains the control unit for the immobilizer, i.e. you would also need the locks and the keys (brown+blue/black).

You mean the engine cut off switch? It has the switch but I think this is only just that: a switch.

Nope!

An immobilizer only allows the vehicle to be started with the corresponding key. With Piaggio, these are usually brown (master) and blue/black (driving key).

The keys are normally coded to the control unit (ECU) in the throttle body.

Either a used throttle body must be virginized to be able to program your keys or you need the matching keys and locks for the throttle body.
But I don't know when Piaggio started to install immobilizers.

Do you have a red flashing LED in the instrument cluster and/or different colored keys?

I'm sorry to hear that!

Try to find the original Piaggio part number and I'll have another look.

ok make sense, yes I have a bigger brown master key and a led flashing light. All the logic might be somewhere else because the guy at the scrapeyard didn'y mention anything about it and if I google immobilizer for a piaggio carnaby I see some small rectangular boxes that wouldn't fit in the throttle body.

I see there are "universal throttle bodies" (with or without kill switches), I guess if I can't find the correct part this would end up being my only solution right? I was still hoping I could order the part for say, a Beverly, MP3 or 300 GTS and make it work somehow.

I have the part number for the throttle body (unavailable everywhere I find it mentionned): 651057

I don't have the one for the cableset but that may be 651058, I may have found a few shops that carry it, pending confirmation because zero picture as always.

651057 Is the right hand trottle control (grip)!

Language problems... No, there is never any electronics in the handle for the immobilizer...

A "throttle body" is something completely different... https://www.ricambiscootermoto.it/en/spare-carburetors/6829627-throttle-body-piaggio-carnaby-cruiser-300-2009-2012

Yes sorry I may not know the names correctly as I have had all the explanations in spanish only and the guy from the Vespa/Piaggio dealer gave me 651057 but probably did a mistake.

What I need is part 14 / ref 641462 (which was broken by the mechanic who installed a universal cable instead of the correct one), 16 / ref 651058 and 17 / ref 651059 which are the opening gas cable and closing gas cables:

Local scrapeyard has part 14, I could find part 16 online but part 17 seems to be a unicorn.

Right now the scooter works with the single universal cable but it actuates the throttle in both direction so you rely on wrist memory to go back to neutral. It is somewhat usable once you get used to it but it will not pass inspection as it is and I need to do it in the upcoming month.

That will be an expensive repair for what are just 2 cables, but that will do it. Thank you so much, you were super helpful on that one!!

Took a moment to snap a picture when going home today.

I basically chose this model over a vespa because my commute involved 20kms of fast highway when I bought it. I wanted a bike that would be stable at 120kph. The 16" wheels help a lot. The Piaggio Beverly would have been even more stable on the highway with its longer wheelbase but the Piaggio Carnaby has a flat foot rest area which is great to carry a large grocery bag. The Beverly doesn't. The only other bike that have similar features is the Honda SH300. I sold my car when moving to Spain with no plan to buy one, so having a good groceries getter was a must.

I sometimes contemplate the idea to sell it and buy a bigger motorbike but then I remember how practical it is in the city and forget about it.

Well it was not out of the road because a mechanic installed me a universal single throttle cable. So it is usable but it will never pass the mandatory inspection (scheduled in late september) that way because throttle actuate in both directions.

I ordered the parts but all repair shops are closed for the annual Feria anyway. It would not be a good time to be stranded.
