Modern Vespa

Modern Vespa's crack team of spies has reported a sighting of OldSchooot on his favorite bench in YSO.

(As an aside, some old-timers still call the store where he is seated "Weaver's". And by old-timers, I mean me).

Possibly posting or reading MV on that bench?

I feel like this is late for OS. Aren't most of his scoot photos in front of the cafe in the black of early morning?

Amazing if your post popped up while he was sitting there reading MV.

My sources report that the photo was taken at 6:45am (EDT).

Forgot to mention: the cafe is just across the street. Incidentally, it's the very same cafe where Dave Chappelle was hanging out way back in 2005 when he "disappeared" from the public eye. He was in Yellow Springs the whole time.

As a former deli employee, I am a big fan of Boar's Head. They are not living their best meat life at the moment, however.

I'm not actually in YS. I'm sitting here in my study in Sunny California.

But I still have family in YS, and they now know you're a member here.

It's crazy to give & get a nod from him on the sidewalk in Y.S......then see him hosting SNL the next day! (in NYC?)
He was in line behind my wife and daughter in Dino's not long ago. The village custom is to politely ignore him - he's presently finishing two major enterprises in town, next door to Dino's and a new comedy club just around the corner. Some know how many buildings he owns in Y.S.
He brought Brad Cooper to town for the premiere of A Star is Borne in the little art theater. Question and answer afterwards....then they went for coffee at Dino's. Hilarious story from the lady who found herself in line ahead of the lovely Brad !
Dave had Letterman in town as well - drinks from Dino's.
My daughter made him laugh one day as he stepped from his G-Wagen- not knowing who he was - and said she liked his Jeep! He set her straight with a smile!

Anyway - the village works to keep him feeling comfortable here.
Seems a pleasant fellow.

I've snapped photos of the really sharp livery of the Boar's Head box truck delivering early morns to Tom's. We bought some B's H. in there a few weeks ago.

What's it like having the MV paparazzi documenting your whereabouts?

Really sad when they painted over it.

I know that area pretty well! It's less than an hour from my house.

My Dayton club (Gem City Rollers) hava 2-3 rides in that area every year, where we typically converge on Peach's Grill for lunch.

I grew up there, but have only been back sporadically in the last few decades. Next to HaHa Pizza, another YS institution. I am old enough to remember when the building Peach's occupies was built -- as a drive-through liquor store. No shit. You can still see the remnants of the drive-through entrance on the back of the building (see below).

And I am even old enough to remember where the liquor store was before that -- right around the corner, where Trail Town Brewing is now.

A question:
When, about what year, did the young people stop showing up in numbers on the streets of this one-time "hippie town"?

It still has the local reputation of being associated with hippies, circa 1960's, ( "town is full of communists", per my great aunt in the 50's) - but these days it is rare to see very many unaccompanied under-20's roaming the village.

I imagine it had something to do with the demise of Antioch college ? But where are the high school kids!?

Things change, sure - B.J. sold HaHa Piazza (often advertised on Chappelle's T-shirts on talk shows) New things are moving in. Chappelle's comedy club should be opening soon. Also he's building a new shop next to Dino's.

As we drove through the village yesterday, I laughed out loud at my concerns for the village....
For the town was absolutely packed with all ages. Not a parking space to be seen! And nothing special was going on! - just a typical afternoon in this destination village. Weekends, weeks days - doesn't seem to matter - in decent weather the town fills after noon.

The summer of 1967 I made my living busking for the tourists on the streets of San Fransico, and shared an apt on Haight Street. My favorite places were the benches in Union Sq. and the coffee shops where you could nurse a cup of joe and pretend to read the N.Y.Times or the Chronicle - for hours. Unmolested.
Yellow Springs has Tom's Group W bench, and the Underdog Cafe' for the lap-top set.

The village is different these days - but I'm not worried - it is still very healthy as a popular destination!

I dunno. I haven't lived there since 1982. And yes, the demise of Antioch certainly had something to do with it.

We just had family visiting from Springfield. Had no idea how close it was to YS.

Looked up YS on Wikipedia. Then I looked up my hometown. Pleased as punch that Hudson had a page too.

Aside from a few wide spots in the road, it is literally next door.
