Do 2008 Vespa s50's have a number plate light? Mine has the housing with clear lens underneath but doesn't appear to have a lamp holder or indeed a loom?

Bike has been sat neglected for nearly 14 years so never been MOT'd so it's never been an issue. Wondered if they put the housing on but didn't populate actually lamp and loom or if my father in law has in some way lost the lamp holder / loom part when getting it running for me?

In some countries they had it, others not, but in the service manual you can clearly see it, also it is a must have for UK Mot, service manual in link below to download see page, 151

Thank you, MOT tester said that it didn't need one for MOT but because it's fitted it has to work, seems odd though that there doesn't appear to be any loom or lamp holder?

Hopefully I am wrong but I was referring to UK official website regarding MOT, as for light parts diagram does show a bulb, you can see picture below, and link to parts diagram, again this scoot in diagram might be a USA version etc and UK models in past maybe did not have it.

The U.K. 50cc's don't have a number plate light.
There is a plastic cover fitted over where the lamp housing attaches.
I suspect your rear mudguard has been damaged at some point and someone put a 125cc one on it.

Thanks for the above advice, took it apart this morning, definitely no loom for a number plate light and the hole a lamp would go through is blanked off. Will speak with the tester tomorrow.

In my own country, Belgium, 50cc mopeds did not have a number plate before 2016. I guess they also did not have number plate lighting until then.
For sure my 1970 - 1975 Motobécane did not even have anything to fix a number plate to.

Nice one lads that cleared that up, will be interesting as to what the MOT says, but I think poster is correct looking at link below, says motorbikes and scooters no light needed.

Number plate light

While the above rules, as well as others, apply to all forms of motorcycle, there is no DVLA requirement to have a number plate light fitted to a moped, motorbike or motor tricycle.

This is a 2007 LX50, blanking cover no lens.

I've had this on a car where it failed on the spare tyre. I took it out then they passed it.
I imagine you could just take the housing off to pass the MOT .

Try to find a confirmation directly on the DVLA site, and you should be in the clear.

4.7.1. Presence, condition and operation

You must inspect all motorcycles fitted with front and rear position lamps.

The rear registration plate must be lit. Most motorcycles will light the registration plate with a rear position lamp, but some will use a separate registration plate lamp.

Some registration plate lamps may be fitted behind the number plate.

Some mopeds might not have a registration plate lamp.
Defect Category
(a) A rear registration plate lamp throwing direct white light to the rear Minor
(b) A rear registration plate lamp or light source missing or inoperative:

(ii) when rear registration plate has only one lamp or all lamps not working

Minor
Major
(c) A registration plate lamp:

(i) not securely attached
(ii) likely to become detached
