Hi all, I need some advice. I'm considering swapping my 86 P125 ( that needs a new clutch and a bit of tidying but solid frame) for a 05 gts 250 that looks pretty tidy and with full mot with belt and rollers done. What do I need to look out for on these particular models. I'm just looking for something reliable for commuting. Do these need any more attention than an early p range, or should I stay where I am. Tia.

Water cooled means radiator / hoses that can deteriorate and coolant to change - also the 4 strokes need valve checks every now and then.

How long have you had the classic?

Sometimes it's "better the devil you know"

A clutch replacement on a classic doesn't seem too difficult. Can be done with the engine in the frame, and there's a special access panel for it: https://www.scooterhelp.com/tips/engine/clutch.old.vespa.html

The P wear items: cruciforms, clutch plates, cables.
The GTS: belt, rollers, guides, clutch shoes and bell may need a little sanding.
Both wear out tires, the P has tubes as well. The GTS bigger tubeless tires which may last a little longer and the big plus is that they can be plugged without removal. The plus for the P is the spare tire.
Coolant system and valve adjustment on the GTS require maintenance as mentioned, but it's a fairly easy task at every 12k miles.
I don't think you will go wrong with either one if you stay on top of the maintenance. One last thing: The GTS is about 350 lbs. with 22 hp, the P is about 250 lbs, with 12 hp. I think it comes down to what feels comfortable to you and what roads you will be traveling.

I've not had the p range long but as soon as I got it I was getting buyers remorse, ie should I have got a gts.
I like the simplicity of the p, easier to fix and less to go wrong. It's alot smaller than a gts, I'm a short arse and I've rode a gts so I know how big they are in comparison especially with the width of the floorboards and that huge (at the front) seat.
For the gts , it's a four stroke so I don't have to rag it everywhere, its got a higher top speed so I could keep up with traffic, I would mainly use it for A road/single carriage use, not motorway. I do struggle to keep up on the p125 even on B roads to work. No 2 stroke oil to buy..yay. Another downside I suppose is the age of the gts.......jeez, I dunno.
