I think you might be referring to the store that was originally called Cannery Sales, then Canned Foods, and is now known as Grocery Outlet:

Probably way fewer sidewalk surprises in 67 I'd wager.

Had to wade through my fellow pan-handlers to get there....and the cans, most of them, no longer had the paper labels.
Kinda like a nutritional "scratch-off" - see what I'd won when I opened the can.

How laid back was it?: we smoked cigarettes tossed from passing cars.
Then things got darker in the early fall of '67 - and many of us left.
In SoCal I met and married a girl (18) when I turned 19. Soon uncle sam came calling me to the games in S.E.Asia....went as a C. O. medic (see Desmond Doss) Most satisfying and important job I've ever had.
Interesting times - wouldn't have missed any of it.

I just read that the Safeway near Fort Mason (sometime called the "date way" for its purportedly flirtatious vibes) is becoming one.

Transitioning from a hippie on Haight St. to the Central Highlands as a C.O. medic made perfect sense to me.
Those of my generation, if they ducked it, missed something big.
