BMW explains why it will sell hydrogen fuel cells in 2028
https://arstechnica.com/cars/2024/09/bmw-explains-why-it-will-sell-hydrogen-fuel-cells-in-2028/

Important quotes before arguing:

the technology should be seen as complementary to battery electric vehicles, not a replacement for them, BMW said

alongside the battery electric, gasoline-, and diesel-powered cars and SUVs it sells today

some regions have such high potential energy yields from solar or wind that it compensates for these conversion losses. That energy can be exported to renewable-poor regions—like Germany or Japan, for example—in the form of hydrogen

It is working with Toyota to develop new fuel cells

EVs go back a lot farther than that:

I think BMW has a sound strategy on the power trains: gasoline, diesel, hybrid, battery EV.
Their view on hydrogen fuel cells is in line with that strategy.

That strategy is basically whatever the market anywhere and what is needed there, and whatever the trend is: they will have it.

Battery EV's are much older.
Back in 1899 the speed record in a car, at that time 100km/h, was set by a battery EV.
It was with the "la jamais contente" driven by Camille Jenatzy, a Belgian.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Jamais_Contente

"La jamais contente" means "never satisfied". The guy was french speaking and "la jamais contente" is feminine. A car in french is a feminine word: une voiture, une automobile. So probably he was referring to his car that was never satisfied.

These electric cars at that time did not make it because the only batteries available at that time were lead batteries. Heavy and low on energy capacity.
At that time engines on gasoline were simply far more practical.

There is recent news in business/investment circles that oil production is so high that gas will be under $3.00 soon as it already is in some places.

Good luck getting people to want electric when gas is cheap.

Regardless of cheap gas in the near future, I think there will still be a market for EV's, hybrids, and PHEV's.

Besides, gas may be cheap for the foreseeable but it fluxtuates.
