Hi everyone, I´m new here. I had a Vespa over 30 years ago then the last 20 years on mid size motorbikes. I´ve now decided to go back to a Vespa and going to order a GTS Super 300.
Sorry in advance if this question has been previously covered.
I need a top box but for various reasons I don´t want the Vespa OEM one. I´m going for Shad - around 34 litres (ideal for me) and think I will have to get the Shad master fitting.
https://www.shad.es/en/bags-and-moto-backrests/piaggio-bags-and-moto-backrests/top-master-piaggio-vespa-gts-super-125-300/
Questions:
Do I still need to change the bar ends?
Does anyone know if Shad do a chrome fitting?
Has anyone put a Shad box onto the OEM straight "parrilla" top box fitting?
Thanks

You're asking if a Shad 34L case will bolt onto this rack? Yes it will. The Shad mounting plate has numerous mounting holes. Install it, load it up, do you get any front wheel wobble? If not, don't go for the heavier bar ends. If so, the bar ends may help. Can't help you with the chrome question. Good choice. Shad makes a great case. I like that you can latch it without the key being in. Welcome to Modern Vespa!

Thanks for that Abner_Bjorn I appreciate your reply (and welcome )
Also seen these, not as strong or as quick to open as a Shad box but I really like the look.

As Abner_Bjorn says, also just for info, a bag will attract more attention for thieves than a simple topbox.

Also I would certainly go for the 39l version way better for helmet etc

Thanks flybynight good advice. If I go with the Shad, I want to get the OEM folding rack, I presume this will also take a Shad box?[/img]

Think this thread will help you and also to avoid rack bouncing, it is a givi but gives ideas.

Givi topcase + rack on a GTS ? anyone?

Shad makes a great box, but I agree that you should get the 39 ltr model as mentioned above. It will easily accommodate any helmet and give you a bit more carrying capacity.

I think the fixed rack might be a better option to use with a top case. It will be a little bit lighter and less complicated than the folding rack. With the folding rack (which I have), you have to rig it to stay open. That means some type of clip, bracket, zipties, hose clamps, or reversing the springs to hold it open. The fixed rack will also be cheaper.

Thanks CrazyCarl. I've just finished reading a link about the Givi boxes. Very useful but, you are right, looks like most riders have had to make extra modifications especially to avoid the "bouncing" issue. I personally like that the fixed OEM rack sits a little higher at the base. My issue is I like the look of the folding rack plus I'm also still thinking about using one of these rigid retro bags - I think they can go on the fixed or folding rack. As others have said, these bags are not as practical and not as good for security. I need to think head versus heart - and I haven't even ordered the bike yet! But I'm getting a new one and as it's such a big expense, I want to get it exactly how I want it. I certainly value all the comments I've had so far. I appreciate it may be repetitive questions but I'm so happy to get the feedback.

I enjoy a good bag. I picked this up at the thrift store on Senior Tuesday for $2.00. It's some kind of overnight bag. I keep my rainsuit and reflective vest inside. Once in a while a water bottle. I've had it on for about a year. I have not had it messed with to date. I have a milk crate I can bolt on the back. It's more usefull, but pretty ugly. A couple points to consider. If you're likely to have a case or bag on the rack most of the time, skip the folding rack. You can fix it down permanently, but that kind of defeats the point of a folding rack. Also, you don't need the top case to be the size of a small apartment to be useful. I have a 32L Kappa case that I've transferred between 6 different bikes. It fits a 3xl full face helmet with room to spare. I can also fit two 2.25 gallon gas cans inside when I go to the station.

Thanks @arbner_bjorn. The more feedback I read, the more I think a fixed rack makes more sense for my needs. And that's a great idea - I will probably go for a box and then keep an eye out for a cheap bag - the one I posted a photo of is over 160€ and I don't think I'll get enough use out of it. My wife has a little Honda Vision and this has a Shad 33L on the back and it's ideal for what she needs (plus takes a full face helmet with space for a small jacket). I can get the fixed rack and then experiment with the box we have and then work out what I need. Thank you and everyone else for your help and suggestions. Cheers!

I bet my last euro you can bargain for a rack and box at the dealer, given there are rumours a new GTS is coming soon
