Hello all,

First off, I am new to the vespa world. I have worked on Honda scooters for many years, so this is new to me.

I purchase a 2008 Vespa LX150 with 388 original miles at an estate sale. It currently does not run. I was provided 2 key, brownish red and a dark blue.

The blue key, a chunk was taken off of it, and I believe the chip is missing. Don't ask me how. I have ordered a new key and plan to program it.

I understand the brown key is the master key, but can this be used to start the scooter?

Welcome!

Yes, the brown is the master key. It can be used to start the scooter. But really it belongs stored in a safe place with the blue keys for everyday use.

It's pretty common for a corner to break off a blue key (from pulling on key ring). But the chip is on the other side and the key usually works just fine.

You can tell if the bike is recognizing the key if the blinking light on dash goes out a couple seconds after the key is turned. In your case, you would probably need a new battery before any electronics work.

The piece missing from the key, is opposite of the ring. See pics.

I was able to crank the scooter with both the blue and brown key. I was not sure if this was allowed unless it recognized the chip. The "Code" light on the dash stays solid red with the blue key. But the red light goes out with the brown key.

Previous own just put in a brand new battery.

Wow, that is one trashed key. Whether it works or not the replacement is a great idea. Nerd emoticon
