Hi there, just wondering what's the easies way (and which cleaning products too) to clean the engine case bolts? Mine are quite dirty/greasy especially in the threads? Gasoline? Brake cleaner? Any Aluminum cleaners?
Thanks
Fab

I , too, use kerosene, a stiff brush and a blast of water. Leaves it so clean it will rust.

I have a small container of varsol, would that be good, or too harsh? These bolts are the black ones. I wonder what they are made of, they look kinda powder coated?

I put them in a plastic jar with diesel (the lid has a hole for Vapor's), put the jar into the ultrasonic cleaner (full of water) for 10/15 minutes, wipe the residues and dry them.

Then I like to soak them into mineral oil, take them and simply wipe. That gives a nice finish and a layer of protection against rust.

Colon, unfortunately, I don't have an ultrasonic cleaner, this is why i was asking about simple, chemicals i can use. Would soaking in 2 stroke gas be good too?

The ultrasonic just speeds the process, especially the fine brushing into the threads.
2 stroke gas should work, maybe not as good as diesel, it is greasy and has solvents. 2 stroke gas has also oil so should work better than dish soap and a sponge

Or would just plain old gas, do the job better?

More volatile, fumes… If you absolutely must use gasoline do it outside.

Varsol is a thinner, don't use that, it will degrease but it is extremely volatile and fumes are very strong and toxic for lungs

The black coating is from heating the hardware red hot and plunging into seed oil

I use the parts cleaner at my work. Stoddard solvent with a stiff plastic brush followed by a coat of oil then wiped off.
