Hi guys, I'm restoring a GS150 VS4 and I'm torn between keeping it as a 6v or fitting a SIP Vape 12volt ignition. I'm looking at keeping it with the original look, but unsure on the reliability of the 6v system.

Original look would be keeping the battery assisted spark.
That at times was the downfall of the system. It was the only model in the entire Vespa line to do it. the issue is not 6v or 12v, this issue is/ or can be the battery assisted spark. you could wire the original stator differently to remove the battery assisted spark all together. |

So I could keep the original fan, sounds good. I put one on my sprint and it's an excellent bit of kit. Would I install a standard wiring loom and take out the battery wiring, or can you buy a harness specifically for the vape conversion?

The original head is aluminum too. The SIP gives you a little more compression, o ring seal and better cooling fins.

I put a Vespatronic on my VS5 and it's more reliable. If you stick with the points I'd consider converting to eliminate the battery or updating the rectifier. I had a solid state device briefly that improved the battery charging but the variable electronic ignition seems better still and no longer worry about battery management. The original battery is expensive and doesn't last long a change will be cheaper in the long run and more dependable.

I'm an originalist guy. I prefer to keep stock 6v with correct tuning still can get me decent speed. However, 12v can be more reliable.

Just more info. I believe you can swap the 3 coils from a VBB system onto the GS150 stator plate and then use a modified VBB harness if you want to stay with a non-battery 6 volt system. You have to get a little creative with the switches to make that stuff work but it can be done. I did it on VS5. It worked fine with the stock/original fan and magnet rotor. I'm not positive a VS4 has the same plate as a VS5 though.
Stock VBB electrical stuff is usually pretty easy to source new too.

I've got a sprint too with a PX 150 engine.
I damaged my stator while trying to get my timing perfect - seems like it might be time to go 12v Does everyone recommend doing it? Do I need to replace all the switches as well as the bulbs/coil/regulator?Is it worthwhile adding a battery? Sip recommend I replace the loom too but that seems a bit nuts especially given the price they want for one of theirs- seems easy enough to make my own of I have to |

I put a sip vape on my Sprint Veloce and it starts a treat and the lights are much brighter. Don't need to replace the wiring, the existing wiring is fine. it comes with wiring instructions and is easy to do. You will need to replace the brake pedal switch and bulbs only. I wouldn't bother putting a battery on, pointless really.

Thanks Chunks!
I was thinking the loom replacement was overkill. Guess SIP were trying to make a few extra quid. Great advice....gonna take the plunge. Looks straightforward and brilliant to hear a positive review before I fork out €400ish |
