I had some rattling and randomly occurring noises coming from the right side of the scooter. Mostly when leaning it over in a curve or hitting bumps in the road.

As you can see, the flywheel fan had completely broken apart and the pieces were scattered in the space behind the shroud as well as lodged in between the cylinder head and the air guide 'housing' around the head fins.

I found a used fan on eBay and AF1Racing had the shroud assembly. Both are on their way.

My question: Do I need to look deeper than simply assuming material failure? The fan is not something anyone seems to stock here in the US and so I assume it is a rather rare occurrence. Which would suggest simply putting it back together and moving on. Other thoughts? Thanks.

PS: FYI, I did not ride it more than a few minutes after the noise started so I hope to not yet have caused any engine damage due to lack of air flowing around the head.

Spin the engine by hand, if there are no hold ups, you are probably fine. I guessing the fan sucked up something off the road and then all hell broke loose

We're all 3 fan screws in place? I had a screw come out once. I put blue loctite on the replacement.

Yes, the three bolts holding (what was left of) the fan to the flywheel were still in place and very tight.
Like you, I was also planning to add a small amount of Loctite when re-assembling. Those 'bolts' are very tiny and so I might go with purple.

Your broken fan is concerning. Glad you have replacement parts on order. I had the fan and shroud off my 2009 LX150 last year to replace a burned out stator. It looked in good shape with no noticeable cracks even after 15 years an 66K miles. Still, there are lots of heat cycles and stresses on these plastic fans and I'm surprised we don't see more failures.

It happens, my 2010 S150 ate a fan. Collateral damage it did manage to slightly bend one of the cylinder cooling fins. Replaced fan and shroud and no further issues.
