I was having problems getting the captive nut to engage one time and I came up with a solution that may help others but it won't get anywhere close to 20mm.
I just got a bolt 5 or 10mm longer and bevelled the end down on a grinder to a tapered point. Just sharp enough to locate the hole in the nut and everything went smooth after that.
It makes it so much easier doesn't it?

The other thing I've been doing for a while now is to use allthread and a nut & washer instead of a bolt. Makes it very easy. I had a lot of trouble getting the bolt out without removing the wheel first most times. Which would be very frustrating in the OP's case.

Good one that! May copy.
The potential problem I see is if the thread would corrode some. Leave enough length to add a second nut?

Loving this idea, I'm sure when I get a chance to work on the setup again this will help, cheers 👍

I haven't had any issues but I guess it wouldn't hurt.

I'm always curious to see the mystery solved, Scooby. But I really understand how the rest of life calls us away for other things. Good luck with your project.

This certainly can be annoying. The nut is loosely captured in a little 'box' that is usually only attached at the bottom so it can bend, which allows for the nut to tilt and get knocked out of alignment and impossible to catch the threads properly. For the last one I ran into, I just cut the box off and used some long forceps to get the nut started. I have also flattened the box a bit and tacked the top so the nut is held in plane and the point on the bolt can center it, but it can't tilt.
